Hi. I am new to mountain biking but have been road cycling for 8 years and fancy a bit of off road!

I have done a little research but could you clarify a few points.

1. Are FS bikes better for XC in terms of comfort, age 50!

2. What are the benefits of a 29nr if any

3. I know the spec of group sets for road Ultegra etc, but what are the entry-mid-high spec groups for MB?

I just want to use the bike for lite stuff like dirt tracks etc

Any help appreciated

    1. It's personal, FS is comfier and can offer more control, but they're heavier and more expensive for an equivalent spec.

    2. They roll better, particularly on rough ground. Becoming extremely popular for XC racing, there's a huge backlash on here because folk seem blinkered!

    3. Deore-SLX-XT-XTR for Shimano and X5-X7-X9-X0-XX/XX1 for SRAM.

Really you need to try multiple bikes and see what you like. Demo bikes are increasingly easy to find these days, or track down a proper demo day with lots of things to compare. There's nothing right or wrong.
