How do you know what suspension forks to buy?!

Similar axle to crown length, long enough steerer tube (and the right diameter obviously).
But unless you are willing to spend more than than is sensible on the bike, you may be wasting your time. Decent forks aren't cheap. And rubbish forks are rubbish.

  • A decent bargain fork, even on here is around £100 usually.

A subway is a commuter bike worth £200? Save up for a bike worth upgrading?

Rockshox Recon Silver for £112 is considered decent but is not very light http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/f ... -2013.html they have a fair few at that place but they are priced accordingly
  • Don't know if they are suitable, you need to measure. Disc only too.

The Subway doesn't have suspension corrected forks, so putting suspension forks on will raise the front end, change the geometry and the extra loading may be too much for the frame.

The Subway isn't the best bike to use as a basis of an MTB, ideally start with, well, an MTB!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I personally wouldn't bother putting suspension forks on it...

Keep it as a commuter and save up for an MTB...
