New Shoes Advice

I have never had clipless shoes before but having just purchased a road bike I thought it would be best to get kitted out with them as well.
I went down to my local LBS for some advice and I have decided on 'MTB' pedals so I can clip into either side of the pedal which I think would make it easier for a beginner. The Shimano shoes that he suggested looked good but had recessed cleats in the shoe so I could walk about fairly normally in them.
I am also planning to have a bike fitting session at my LBS (£45) and at the same time getting used to new shoes and pedals as I've had no experience before.
My question comes down to price, he quoted £105 all in for shoes and pedals and coupled with the bike fit it would be £150. This seems fairly steep to me but the advantage is that I get fitted for my bike and get used to the pedals in the shop on a turbo trainer rather than out on the road.
Would anyone suggest this is the best way to go or maybe to buy some cheaper shoes online and sort that myself?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seems cheap to me as all 4 pairs of my shoes and my pedals have been over (some waaay over) the 100 quid mark. 45 for a bike fit is stupid cheap and I'd be a bit worried about the quality as I do find that you get what you pay for.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

that doesn't sound too bad then. I've just had a quick look and the price for pedals and shoes does seem fairly reasonable. I have had some experience with bike fitting from there and they do seem quite thorough but I can see you point, thanks.0

you need to tell us what shoes and pedals. Plus you will need multi-release cleats too if you want them to release easily.
You can get SPD shoes that are reasonable for 20-30 quid, pedals for 20 and cleats for 10. but of course you can spend more.
To get MTB shoes that are "OK" on the road means spending more than the equivalent road shoes. Basic M520 pedals are fine though. They don't get the same pounding they get on an mtb.0
