5 years on and I've replaced one cable (rear mech; cable frayed inside the shifter). Bike ridden all year round, but with full mudguards for three quarters of the year.
  • It's very easy to damage i.e. kink an inner, thats my most common reason for changing. Open the ends of the outers when changing the inner, spray some lube to flush any dirt out and thats about it. I'll change the outers about once a year, some times the bit that goes to the rear mech a bit more often. Always worth buying good inners.
  • Onthe road bike...er, never. On the MTB, just a few times in the last decade. I tend to spray GT85 in the outers to flush out crap. Then spray other grease which I can't remember what.

I do mine when I do the bar tape. Since I do tend to fall off fairly frequently I like to do it annually.
