Bike Insurance

Hey guys, I need to get some insurance for my new Giant Defy 1. Are there any go-to companies that everyone seems to use? I want to be protected against it being nicked, getting knocked off, and 3rd party. I got a quote from the company that does my student insurance and they said £95-100 for a £1000 bike, sound about right?
Any help greatly appreciated,
Tom

I have my bike insured for just over £2000 with Velosure and I am paying £150 a year. That includes public liability etc,so if I hit a wing mirror off a Ferrari Enzo or run down an old lady I'm covered !
  • ETA are good, cover a lot of stuff and you get back what you insured your bike for - no depreciation

I dont use a specific bike insurance. I have 3 bikes included in my house content insurance at no extra cost!

Specialist bike insurance is usually around 10% of the value per annum in premiums + a whole raft of strict T&Cs. You're usually better of going with contents insurance as long as you can get a high value bike covered (M&S used to be the best option but have changed their cover limits and increased premiums so not sure who's best now). If you want public liability cover (and your house insurance doesn't cover it) then just become a CTC or BC member as this is included, along with easy access to solicitors should you require them.

Yep, me to. Just put my new bike on the contents insurance, £0. Also my Home insurance and British Cycling membership pays for personal liability up to £2,000,000.

Depending on your house insurance (student house can be notoriously bad) worth a look and joining BC or CTC. If you want more cover say for damage on a fall maybe (not sure on this cover) or have poor content insurance then try ETA. I found this whilst looking http://www.londoncyclist.co.uk/bicycle-insurance/ worth a quick read.

My biggest worry was not theft (unlikely to leave my bike alone and house is covered/pretty secure with 2 large dogs to help) but liability and injury and damage with a fall or crash. On the other hand, still not sorted the insurance yet as I only found my frame number yesterday

Does this cover bikes away from home?

Do bikes have to be kept in the house and not in the garage or garden shed?

Always check your contents policy for cycle extension.

normally house insurtance only covers bikes up to £1,000 - my more expensive bikes I have specific cover for - this seems to cost me 14% of value per annum - I think I need to change it.
