Hey everyone I'm new here and I have an issue. I have a Giant Yukon FX 2008 and I would like to know what kind of headset do I need to buy for a tapered steer fork currently running RockShox Dart1 1" 1/8 steer looking to upgrade to a RockShox Recon silver tk tapered steer. If possible can u guys tell me the size of the headset (diameter).
Thank-you

Does your frame support a tapered steerer? What sort of headset is it now (photo's?), if it's external you can't fit a tapered (at all, ever).
Photo's suggest it is external http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/33 ... Yukon.htmlCurrently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
I not to sure if my frame support tapered steer but right now its running zero stack headset from crab creek. I believe the headtube diameter is 49.57 mm. I'll try to get photo soon.0

Zero stack will be a headtube ID of 44mm and you need an internal (top) external (bottom) combo to run tapered.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

a tapered fork will not fit without a rather expensive headset. and even then it might not fit as the headtube is waisted.
standared internal headtube there."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just wondering would this headset work with the frame and fork.

Yes, but as Nick pointed out, the headtube is wasted and the tapered steerer may not fit inside it.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

could you guys explain what "headtube is wasted" mean?0

thinner in the middle. not a straight tube."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

and like i said with a waisted head tube the chances of getting the steerer into it is reduced.
and then will the headset fit? a 15mm inset depth is needed. and the waist in the head tube means that i am fairly sure it will not fit.
here is an example of the headset

Nicklouse: do u think there might be a chance of using this headset
http://store.canecreek.com/products/pro ... t=1&i=all&
Is 12 mm depth smaller than nukeproof0 -

No, as the wise old men above have said.
It's a is straight steerer but 120mm rather than the 100mm you are looking at. Just an option if you would like a bit more travel.
One thing to remember if buying second hand is that the yukon frame needs quite a long steerer length, measure yours when removing it.0 -

Currently running 205mm long steer length would a 220+mm steer lenght do the trick or a bit more.0 -
Worry first if it will actually go IN your frame......
But yes it would.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

Checked my mates, it is indeed waisted. I don't think it is possible to fit a tapered steered, at all.
Has the OP already made his purchase perhaps?0 -
Yeah check everything and it has come to a conclusion that a tapered steered will not work with the bike/frame. Going to stick with 1 1/8" steer and thanks everyone for their information.0
