That was a brilliant program - beautiful scenery - and what a challenge - well done to all.

By the way when is next months one on, I wouldnt mind watching the triathlon event.

    Just posted on facebook -
The Celtman will be on Sunday 9 December at 1900 - all the usual places. Another epic event that I'm sure you'll like. Also features a wild walk with Cameron; a cycle hill race and Dougie trying out dry tooling.

I wonder what 'dry tooling' is...
Would welcome company for Sat rides west/south of Edinburgh, up to 3 hrs, 16mph ish. Please PM me if interested/able to help.

It's what you do if you're not getting frozen out.

Anybody fancy doing the route mid summer in 2013? I am only a sportive rider but have done really hilly solo rides up to 175miles.[/quote]

Bonkers, just absolutely bonkers. I shudder at the Lecht on my motorbike.

I watched it but wasn't that sure of the route, Glenshee/Lecht I got, but what about the Cairn o Mount ?

Dry tooling is like ice climbing u without the ice. Basically it's climbing up cliffs using ice axes and crampons when it isn't Icey!

Hi Alan, great that you fancy it. The furthest I have done in one day on my own was 280km but could stretch to another 20km I think. I dont know if you have done these roads before but the scenery is as good as it gets.

I reckon I have moderate fitness and no stranger to long days in the saddle here and abroad.

    I'll send you a PM.

No probs Brian, haven't done quite that distance, 130 miles the most in one go. not been up those roads but looking forward to it. Fitness is good average about 6000 miles a year.

Anyone else on here who is doing the 300km Snow Roads on Saturday?

This will be my first attempt at this distance. I did some of the hills this last weekend during the Alford King of the Mountains 100 miler.....weather was horrendous and it took more than an hour for me to stop shaking afterwards....I lost the feeling in my left toes at about Rhynie.

Really not sure how to pace this as it is quite a bit further than I am used to....and obviously hilly. Lets hope the roads are not blocked...forecast for Thursday for example is terrible.....7c and 26mph winds

There's no snow on the roads up there as far as I'm aware. I'm not doing the snow roads but I'm thinking of heading over Cairn O Mount on Saturday. Wish I was doing it today as it's lovely outside, not even a breeze!

All the best with it, I take my hat off to anyone going for it and dream that maybe one day I'll be up for such a thing...

Just one observation though - if you think 7°C and 26mph winds is bad, you obviously haven't spent that much time on these roads: there was fresh snow on the road at Glenshee just a fortnight ago.
  • My interpretation is 12 Celsius with a light easterly wind in dry conditions based upon Ballater. Clearly, windier and colder at higher levels.

Just cool enough to keep Culicoides Impunctatus at bay.

Good luck it looks like a brilliant route, I might do it next year. I did the deeside loop a couple of weeks ago and the climb over glenshee was brutal due to winds - I had forgotten that the height would add significantly to the wind speed. At the top of Glenshee I had to unclip and walk because I thought I was going to get blown over.

Awesome effort. Weather was minging on sat.

Oh I am well aware of the recent conditions...i went over Glenshee a couple of weeks ago and there was some fresh snow. Indeed, snow is forecast in the hills today and tomorrow...but I find strong winds to be an absolute killer.

The conditions during the Alford "King of the Mountains" were appalling on Saturday. Wet and foggy...then dense cloud on the Lecht which was dangerous...and for the last 40 miles or so absolute pishing rain...really cold too and it took me a good hour to stop shaking afterwards......and had to negotiate a huge puddle even to get to my car.

The weather for Saturday at present looks ok

Aye. Sleet in the showers that have been pummeling Aberdeen today.
But, as you say, it'll be gone by Sat.
Forecast is, dare I say it, reasonably good for the day.

Any idea when this will be on the telly?
At the erse end o' a coo!
  • Having made a round trip from Worcestershire to Scotland to ride the 2013 event, I can honestly say that it was worth it. Firstly, it was a superb event passing through challenging and stunning country. It was also brilliant to see so many audax virgins taking up audax as their new sport.

Sorry, you missed it. The programme covered 2012's event and was broadcast last year.
