So you get up at 6am to meet and train with the club at 7am.. and what do you get when you go out?

...black ice on the first hill

ah well it doesn't look too bad?

... oh wait

8160493245_3e981764ef_z.jpg

and its now gone a deeper shade of purple. I'm just glad it was on Ice so I slid rather than getting serious road rash.

Damage to the bike:

Will that be fixable? shifting and braking still works fine.. I even managed an angry 4th on Strava on the way home :mrgreen:http://app.strava.com/activities/27069205#485320455

Apart from that I've damaged my £40 shorts, £10 gloves, and £7 oversocks. (and pride)

An expensive 15 miles then!

Let this be a lesson to those who think it's brave and manly to ride when there's a risk of ice, it's not brave, it's not manly, I learnt the hard way too........

Glad you aren't too badly hurt, I've know people to bust hips and pelvis's coming off in the ice........

Its a bit annoying really as since I went out with a group from the club I was going faster than I would have been alone as I was mid-group and couldn't see it coming... 2/7 of us fell of on the same patch, and the guy in front had his wheel slide but somehow stayed upright.
  • Did the same 3 weeks ago, same size rash, same leggings. I feel your pain. The most frustrating part is the healing process, not being able to sleep on the side of the injury is very annoying plus the constant weeping of the rash.
DHB gear is great, I notice you have a minor rip, mine survived intact.

Ahh road rash..My old friend...enjoy the puss.
  • I too fell victim to the ice this weekend. Managed to cycle around 56 miles without incident and then went round a corner at around 6mph and my wheels just went from under me. Luckily I fell on black ice and didn't graze any of my skin. I have a bruise the size of a football on the top of my thigh and a bit of a graze on my elbow, apart from that I'm not too bad.

It's funny because I just remember seeing the ice and thinking 'I'm going to come off here...' and then it sort of happened in slow motion. I'm just thankful no one was around and there were no cars on the same road. I shouted a few expletives and dusted myself down.

I was in that much pain that I decided to call it a day after that. Cycled to the nearest village and called home, accepting defeat.

I'm seriously hoping the weather is better this weekend.

All I remember is seeing the guy's wheel in front go and thinking "oh Sh*t"... can't remember how I fell?

My right hand thigh is the one that took the brunt of the impact.. but my left shifter is the one that's bent.. odd?
  • What a lot of woosies! I'm on the forum 'cos I've bought an electric assist bike to recover from paragliding accident. Broken tib and fib, exploded ankle, broken back, four places, five ribs, sternum, neck and skull! what you moaning about?
ps damaged gear? had a £1100.00 harness cut off me, really pissed about that

I'm just sharing my mild misfortune to stop others making the same mistakes!

    Now now hard man.

I can imagine you saying this in the style of the four Yorkshire men...."that is nothing, we were so poor...."

Nothing woosie about it, just people sharing experiences, not moaning about it. Difference.

I've hit a car at 70mph on a motorbike but it doesn't make coming off a pushbike any easier or less painful, you get that split second thought of knowing that it's going to hurt and it does, you're generally grateful that you haven't broken anything and then you're more bothered about the bike and clothing.

I've never heard of an early morning club ride like that before. Now I think there may be a reason.
Get well soon and take it easy this week - your body needs time to recover.
  • I came off this weekend as well. I had sensibly waited until the ice had melted and then hit a patch of mud going round a corner and the wheels came out from under me. Bruising and road rash but nothing serious.

The fields are so wet at the moment that the tractors have made a right mess of the roads and they are almost impassable in places. I've seen a few people nearly lose it in a car.

It is brave and it is manly. It can also be painful and expensive though :( . See Rule #9 (http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#9).

If we stopped cycling in Yorkshire when it got cold, we'd only be out a couple of months a year :) .

Yes! Crashing at 30mph down a hill makes me a badass! (And there was me thinking I'm an idiot  )

In that case I'll be out tomorrow with my road rash and swollen hip to do it all again

    That's gotta sting !

Ice is the worst, it happens s quickly that there's nothing you can do other than your best impression of a sack of spuds !

holy sh*t... just got back in and the swelling has increased to roughly the size of a small football?

Doesn't help that I don't have a freeze for an icepack at uni.

I recently had a fall too. The culprit wasn't ice though. It was a few innocent wet leaves.

I laughed it off as it happened right in front of my house. The coast was clear though...I hope.

I knew you were from Yorkshire even before I got to the bit where you said you were....and you know am I a southerner how?, because of where I live?, I know it's probably an alien concept for someone from Yorkshire, but it is possible to live somewhere other than where you were born......

Other than that, you sir, are my hero 8)
