Hi All,
I am a newbie in the forum and have bought Boardman mtb comp 2012 few months back. The bike came with Suntour Epicon LOD, Air, 120mm, damping adjust, lock out. Recently my bike suspension fork, handle bar, stem, headset, hydraulic brake lever and calipers got stolen (whilst bike was locked to bracket in a secured bike storage area).
I am in process of getting my MT Bike back to road. I have now opportunity to upgrade to a better fork from Rock shox. Suntour epicon will cost £180.00 from Halfords. Other Boardman MTB comes with Rock Shox recon gold 120mm, Rock Shox REBA 120mm. Additionally I dont want to spend anything more than £300 on forks.
Please can any bike Guru suggest me which Rock shox fork will gonna fit Boardman MTB comp 2012. Following is the geometry of MTB Comp bike:
Frame size SM MD LG
TT Top Tube 565 590 615
ST Seat Tube 406 457 483
HT Head Tube 120 130 140
HA Head Angle 69° 69° 69°
SA Seat Angle 73° 73° 73°
CS Chain Stay 420 420 420
Fork Travel 120 120 120
Handlebar Width 640 670 670
Stem Length 90 90 90
Crank Length 170 175 175
regards
Raj

Have to check what steerer it actually has, lists it as standard and tapered!0
-
It's a standard0
-
Definitely the Reba linked above then - have a look around on on-one and merlin for cheap forks.0
-
Thanks all for suggestions. I get from the description that Recon forks are tapered ones and hence the frame for Boardman Pro, Pro-carbon, team-carbon with tapered steerer. But some of the REBA ones comes with Tapered steerer. These many not fit MTB Comp frame as its standard. Additionally, travel on most of the fork is 100mm. Existing suntour epicon fork is of travel 120mm as well. Halfords says that i need to get fork with travel 120mm only. I am bit confused.0

You can have 100 or 120 both equally suitable. 100mm for racey 120mm for a bit more of a play bike0

Apparently its easy enough to do (i've never done it though). I doubt halfords will do it, when I've gone in, its been basic servicing and gear set up etc, but you can try asking them. Give it a go at 100mm to start off with, you might prefer the feel.0

dont let halfords do anything take it to a decent bike shop and ask them, i havent had mine adjusted from 100 to 120 yet but i probably will when i get it serviced .it feels great at 100mm anyway.Viner

I'd happily let halfords dismantle my forks (if I couldn't do it myself) .... the guy that deals with me is a sponsored downhill rider, and the rest all ride xc and downhill themselves. I just don't think they'd offer fork servicing.
Not all halfords are the same, mine is better than any LBS I've been in.0 -
Do it yourself, it's really not hard, just use teh manual (online if in doubt) and look at it, each step by itself is easy.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Thanks everyone. This evening, I am going to my local Halfords to ask them if they are happy to fit REBA forks (100mm) or not. As I have a bike care plan, they have offered me to fit it for free.
Additionally, what all tools and other things would I need if I want to remove the spacers myself.0 -

To remove spacers you probably only need a 5mm alen key. For the whole fork you will need a new star nut (£2) flat head screw driver, some grease, a hammer and a pipe cutter/hacksaw. Look at youtube for instruction. Its silly easy!0 -

In other words, you need to cut the steerer to the correct length, insert the star nut, take the crown race of the old fork and put it on the new and then slide the fork into the frame.

It's a 1 1/8 steerer, the description is wrong in the blurb, but it's right beside where you pick the fork to add it to your basket. You can email/phone to make sure though.0

If you click the buy now and then go to the basket it states 1/18 steerer, not tapered, so you should be fine.0 -
However, perhaps best to call first?0
-
Ok, thanks. I shall give them a call tomorrow. You guys are life0

When I brought mine they were both 299.99 so I didnt have that dilemma . 225 is an amazing price im sure the black will look good . The forks are well worth it my cannondale feels like a differant bike , mine came with a push lock not a poplock as stated works really well thoughViner

Ok Thanks everyone. I have now bought Rock shox reba RL 100mm Solo Air fork (Black) from on-one.co.uk. I shall get it tomorrow by courier. I spoke to on-one tech support team and they said that steerer is a standard one only.0
-
It says weight based on tapered steerer, but the product looks to be standard 1 1/8. Why not give them a ring just to be sure?
ETA: ignore me, didn't note there was another page of advice!0 -
Got REBA by DPD today . Feels and look lot better than Suntour Epicon.0
