Hi all,

I posted about handlebars a few weeks back but after todays ride I definately need some wider ones.

Ive narrowed it down to these two:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67688 680mm 30mm rise
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67693 700mm 40mm rise

I don't know which is going to be the best. The bike is a RR8.1 with 600mm bars and a 90mm stem. I wasn't planning on changing the stem as I believe 90mm isn't excessively long anyway.

Will there be any noticable difference between the two above?

Cheers

so they have, hope they measured them right  , personally i'd be happy with either, but its quite a jump from a 600mm, i had a 640mm bar originally, changed it for a 680mm found it much better, but everyones different

  • It doesnt sound like much does it, only 80mm bigger than current bar. Only 40mm either side doesn't sound like alot really. My mates bike has really wide bars but its a £2k FS. Don't know the width exactly but bigger than 700 definitely.

your right it doesn't sound much, but its surprising how a few mm's feel different, i have the 680mm on my spesh and 711mm on my nerve, it is noticeable

  • Which do you prefer?

I had no issues with my 600 bars at Degla, but today at Hopton (rooty) I wanted the wider bars.

its not just the width though, the 2 bars you linked to have different rises, i would say the 30mm is mid rise and the 40mm a high rise bar, could make a difference to you ?

  • Hmm, i did select the 30 and 40 rises rather than the 20 because I have very long legs so I have the seat quite high in comparison to the bars, I thought a bit more rise would help lift the bar height up a bit so I'm not as bent over. Other than that I don't know what else it would effect.

i did the same with the nerve for the same reason, it came with a 685mm low rise (20mm) bar, the 711mm i changed it for is a mid rise (30mm) bar, felt much better for me, but its what feels natural for you that matters, only you can determine that

  • Do you think I need to change the stem if I go for either of those bars? Its a 90mm stem which isn't excessively long I don't think, its just that the 600 bars are unusually narrow. Will a 680/700 90mm stem combo be ok?

Try the 90mm, if it feels long, change it!

I fitted high rise bars to my 456SS to try to compensate for the high seat post & it ruined the handling and made the front light when climbing. Now I only have a 15mm rise and 10mm spacers under the stem. Riser bars are good for freeride & jumping
