On the off chance any one out their know the average % incline ,max% incline and height gain on Cat Tor on the A53 nr the Roaches? Will have to get myself a GPS unit one of these days. I cycled down this hill during Rourkies cat and fiddle event ( really good event/ day :D ). I want to do more hill work so I included this hill as part of my route today.

This is the downhill segment, like you i wentdown, not up!
The "solomans freefall" bit was fun, if a little scary...
  • Bit scary that. Record time downhill is 55mph or 89kmh almost. Insane! Been down there several times with brakes on cos terrified of losing control. Was impressed to see Cav and Wiggo coming down there in ToB.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's scary.

I came down there on the tour ride and combine the gradient with the cars and the shocking road surface it makes for a scary descent. I hit 40mph and needed brown shorts.
  • It is indeed an interesting descent, I got upto 48 when I did it during the Cat and Fiddle Rourkies event.
As i said above I am after building on my hill work so approached it from the Leek side (up hill)this time. I managed to get up it but it wasnt preaty . I was interested in the profile as the hill before this one is signed as being 17% gradient and whilst I knew Cat Tor wasnt as steep is is longer.
On the way back home I again went via Cat Tor but the road was greasy under wheel and this time I bottled out at 44 mph and dabbed the brakes a little.
Cheers for the profile Negativelylycra .
