We were at a wedding yesterday and one of the blokes on our table asked what each of our specialist topics would be if we applied for Mastermind, which I thought was a great conversation starter.

I see myself as more of a general knowledge man so don't have a massively specialist subject, but would probably go with something along the lines of Antarctic exploration. Laura went with Henry VIII.

What would yours be?

The number 12 and the letter E.

Which episode of Sesame St was brought to you by the number 12 and the letter E?

At Love Parade 2001 in Berlin, what did I drop?

  • I'm reliably informed that you have to supply several because it changes as you progress through the series and most have been taken.

I'd go for the Wu Tang Clan, The Wire and The Tour de France. I'd be our first round.
  • I am ashamed to admIt this, but if I wanted to progress beyond the first round, it would be Star Trek.

What? It's just one of those things where detail sticks, ok? It happens. Live with it.

The Star Trek reboot movie was both enjoyable and deeply frustrating all rolled into one. Very hard to explain.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

  • Oo. A few.
    1. The life and works of Franz Kafka
    2. Life and works of Alban Berg
    3. Buffy the Vampire slayer series 1 through 7
    4. The Archers

Could probably take a round on the works of Iain (M) Banks too.

The EMI 2001. Gotta pick a specific narrowband subject, not something too wide ranging like The Middle Ages.

  • I've sat in the big black chair. You need to pick four topics.

I went with the history of the Electric Guitar since '52 for openers. Follow-ups were to be The films of Kevin Smith, Jimi Hendrix and the Hellblazer comics. I got knocked out in round one, falling into a bit of a "group of death" where every contestant's score would have won any other show in the series.

I'd love to give it another go some day.

Being a journalist means you get to become a short-term expert on a lot of things (which you promptly forget later) Right now I would choose Big Cats on the Serengeti, a well as the two topics of stories i am presently working on.

I would also, like the OP, choose History of Antarctic Exploration

More of a generalist here, but I could try for castles of England and Wales, or the history of the city of Bristol, with particular reference to the development of its street network.

    The Doors/Jim Morrison for me.

In general I hate quiz shows even though I think I have pretty good general knowledge. The wife and i do play 'University Challenge' though every week at her insistence. I always win.

Seriously, would have to be something like the history of fighter aircraft 1939 to present day. I have a 19.99 anorak in that one.... :D

Talking of Star Trek, someone round the corner from me had clearly decided they had had enough of Start Trek Deep Space 9 over last weekend, it seemed the entire collection of episodes on video were lined on his/her front wall for anyone to take... There must've been 50+ Deep Space 9 vids available...

    This is tough . .

I have no specialist knowledge of anything more than anyone else . . i'll have to pick four topics that I could happily learn more about and have some of it stick . . .

    1. James Bond Films (50 years and 25(?) films worth - might be allowed to cut this down a bit . .)
    2. Stuffing the French
    3. British small arms 1880 - 2000
    4. Matterhorn north face ascent
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    What would Thora Hurd do?
