- Car full of petrol? Check.
- Bike and bike shoes packed? Check.
- Clothes? Ummm... Wait a minute... I'm sure they were here. Yes, definitely. I put them in that green bag because they were a bit fruity and needed to dry off. Oh... It's at home.

Aaargh!

3.5 hours of driving, some lovely empty roads, great hills to climb and I have forgotten to bring my bike clothes.

In winter.

I even packed the bloody GPS, spare inner tubes, pump and all the rubbish you take but never need!

Moron.

No lowers to wear. Apart from a pair of pyjamas. Yes, I drove here in my pyjamas. Don't judge me.

I once set off for a ride from home (on my bike, didn't drive anywhere) and completely forgot my helmet, gloves, sunglasses - the lot. I got halfway down the road and then realised....

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.
  • In your pyjamas??? Hmmm....a bit weird.

Did you take your dressing gown & slippers too?

    Anyway, bad luck dude.
  • Not that weird. Worked overnight and was going riding over the weekend so packed everything the night before. Idea was to have a nap after work, sling everything in the car and head off. Obviously I didn't sling the right things in!

Worst thing is there's a decent bike shop nearby, but I can't bring myself to part with the £100 or so it would cost for jersey, tights, base layer and socks. So now I'm stuck doing revision.

Oh, and I have a pair of slippers and a dressing gown. And gloves, helmet and glasses. Perhaps I should start leaving a spare set of cycling clothes in the car. Last time I went on a trip I wound up buying new shoes and pedals because I'd left my shoes at home.

Any recommendations to help me remember all my things next time please? I can't be the only one who's done this?

Just make a checklist to run through before every time you go for a trip. Tick it off when the item is in the car.

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.
  • Pack a bag & leave it by the front door the night before you go. Or write a note "don't forget kit" & stick it to the front door the night before.

Doing revision? You don't strike me as the type that would need to.

Try laying out everything that you are going to need the night before, if you leave it till the morning there is always a chance you'll overlook something.

  • fantastic. Ive done a few things like that but i know of a guy that went for a bike fit and yes you guessed it got so excited about it got there (furtunately an hours drive away) looked in the back of his empty estate car "5hit" trip back home to get the bike!

My personal favourite is to forget to take off the grubby old fleece trackies I wear over my kit while getting ready to head to work in the morning. But in my years as an outdoor instructor, I at one point or another managed to forget more or less anything you could forget - tent, sleeping bag, boots, the lot. I never let it make me turn back.

I'll admit to putting on an overshoe before realising I hadn't even put shoes on.

Another early morning habit of mine, before I turned into a coffee snob and stopped using instant, was to lose count of how many spoons' full of coffee I had put in my cup. The nadir, though, was the morning I only realised after the third spoonful that I had put it on my cereal.

  • Checklist and car all the way next time. Thanks for the suggestions!

Was consoling myself with the forecast (was supposed to rain today) but it's turned out half decent. Salt in the wound and all that. Ah well, I'll be back at Christmas time. Roads will be nice and empty then. May even be able to do a bit of this on the descents.

Sucks man, but it happens. Whenever I go back home and decide to bring the bike, I'll pack everything up the night before, zip it up, and put it in front of my bedroom door; that way it's the first thing in the car, along with the bike.

Move it all as a unit, and it's less likely to be overlooked. After finally getting cycling shorts and a compression shirt (getting cold, jersey in the spring :)), I realized how necessary it is to have proper cycling gear.

You could always buy a cheap backup set and keep it in your car along with your backup, emergency clothes.
