Does it work?

I've got a scruffy old Kawasaki GPZ500 with surface rust on the swing arm and the frame, I was wondering about giving it a go over with some Hammerite. The blurb claims it kills surface rust.

    Hammerite is crap.

Go to the FROST website and look for 'Metal Ready' (removes rust) and POR-15 (about 20,000 times better than Hammerite). Expensive, but it works.

Only if you prepare the surface carefully as for any other paint.

If you can't be ar$ed and don't mind it looking a big crap, smatter some Hammerite Waxoyl on it. It will stop it getting worse, or at least, slow it down.

I once painted a mountain bike frame with Hammerite when I was a kid .. probably doubling its weight in the process.

Me too. I did prefer my 'Townsend Topeka' in metallic green than the factory supplied pink.

In hindsight, painting the cassette, chain, derailleur (and even grips!) was a bit much, not that i really noticed a drop in performance.

Ha! My sister did this many years ago - 8 years old, finds a tin of silver spray paint... sprayed the entire bike, everything. Even the tyres  actually looked okay, no drips, quite a pro look for an 8 year old!

I resprayed the bike my daughter learned to ride on to Rover British Racing Green for my son to do the same. He did once question why it had purple brake cables!

  • As a quick and easy solution, Hammerite will do the job admirably.
There are better paints, but its a scruffy Kawasaki (your words  )...we used Hammerite by the bucketful years ago in an industrial setting. If it was crap, we wouldnt have brought it. Hammerite Smooth gives a better finish BTW.

+ 1 - my dad used to use this on (the underside) of every Rover SDI (Vitesse) V8 that we had - seemed to work ok.

That was a NICE car, shame Rover made it and gave it such a rusty steel shell.
