It does not cheer me up that you all live in houses so big that the WiFi fails to reach the more distant wings.

I am sure there is a solution involving your second homes

My mud hut is 14ft wide.
    Liar. Surely 14ft in diameter?
    Proper mud huts are round.

Not in Deb'n. Tis proper mud, n' a bit of straw, 'n probably a bit of dung too, to bind it all together. Uz'll make any shape with it, round, or square. Remember that Grand Designs house? Built by the father of a friend, even if it did blow the family apart...

Well I was born in Africa and our mud huts of original design (and pre-dating bastardised European versions) are all round.
So there. Yooz lot down in darkest Deb'n 'as lot to learn. Lots.

...and you need a spike in the middle to keep the owls* from perching on the roof 'cos it's bad luck if an owl perches on your roof. You can't have a spike on a square hut. Does nothin' see?

*Diatonic scales might do the job.

Plenty of pre-Roman round houses in Britain. I guess once the pattern of land ownership is set on long thin strips, rectangular houses make more sense.

And is not a hut :)
Mosques generally are not round due to the prescribed method of worship. There's probably a PhD thesis in the influence of Greek and Roman architecture on the practice of different Abrahamic religions.

In Western Europe churches are based on the form of the basilica because that was the (secular) building that early Christianity adopted, whereas in Eastern Europe churches evolved from the form of 'martyria' - saints' tombs.

It was more the point that structurally it can be big and not round and even in Africa.

But yes, Mecca is the only place with round praying.

Oh, absolutely. Masonry or timber frame construction doesn't preclude round buildings either.

Intriguingly there is a cluster of round church towers in East Anglia.

There's a round chapel in the town of Burt in Donegal. It's the foot of a hill and designed to echo the ancient Fort at the top.

Grandad TWH was a bricklayer on the build of the chapel.

Using Librarika to catalogue my books. The app is a bit shyte, but the website version is good: type in the ISBN, and add the book. Good if you lend books to friends, and you want to remember who's got what... you can even send reminder emails automatically, like a real library (remember them?)

I presume that goes with teaching - otherwise i'd say you were bored.

More a case of a date-based and anarchic collection of books, shared between two houses. At least now I know if the book I'm looking for is in the house I'm in, or 850 miles away.

Exchanging contracts on our new place yesterday. After what seemed like a long time even though it wasn't. Not so trivial for me but maybe for most others. We'll be in by the 28th and plenty still to do.
