Just ordered an XT 2 x 10 chain set and FD, to replace the XT 3 x 10 and FD. Do I need to order a new shifter too, or do they operate differently to road shifters?

Nope, the mech limit screw will stop it shifting to the third position, but I have no idea how your road shifters work, mine has friction shifters.

In what way operate differently? You move the lever, it pulls some cable which moves the mech... Just set the stop as CD says.

I wanted 2 x 10, with a shorter cage. The bits changed out will possibly go to the revamp of my Giant NRS 1

So change the mech or mechs, no need to touch the shifters.......

That's the plan, now. New mechs and chain set, run from same shifter

so what are you trying to gain? other than making it harder for any given gear?

Nothing... My preference is for 170mm cranks, road or dirt
