hi im interested in buying a pair of prescription cycling glasses
so i get the benefit of the shape and better wind protection
also will look more the part.
better than my current penfold on a bike look lol

has anyone got any experience in these and which type to buy??
dont want to spend a lot of money and not like them,

got a link to this place but dont know if they are any good. these have a little pair of clip in lenses for my prescription side of things so should have the look and benefits of proper glasses
but they are a long way from me so i can t go look at them and try them on, so its a bit of a leap of faith
the price i have from them it around £90 made to my prescription

After having a lot of problems with my contacts recently I needed to get some prescription lenses. Looked into getting a pair of adidas from my opticians. Also looked at the RX inserts, but didn't like teh feeling of them being too close to my eye.
Worked out cheapest to buy lenses for my existing Oakley frames. I really only wanted to buy one pair of lenses, so they were going to have to be photochromic
In the end I bought some transition lenses for my Oakley frames from Balance Optics. Great service from them as they didn't have them advertised on the website and they were really helpful. Came to about 140 squid from what I remember
They're the grey transitions - from 10% to 80%. Really can be worn at all times, as I've worn them commuting back in the dark as well as on the odd bright day. They also seemed to have the prescription mapped round the lens, so I didn't get any problems wit focus when I was looking out of the side rather than straight ahead
  • if im honest thats what im worried about is the lenses being too close to my eyes.

i do like the idea of having the full width vision so may give them a call at Balance optics see if my prescription will fit into some cycling glasses.

    Optilabs often get good reviews.

I've got Briko Klip glasses, but I don't think they are made anymore. They use an insert which took some time to get used to and sweat running off my forehead often fogs up the lenses. They're ok but I'll go for something else next time. Oakley are considered the best, but at a price.

I used to use Bolles (can't find the accent for the 'e') which had a pair of prescription lenses fitted to the nosepiece, clip-in stylee. This meant you could change the main lens to suit the conditions. Had the fogging issue that someone else mentioned it that is normal with most close-fitting glasses. Just use normal specs, Fignon-stylee now.
  • im really not happy spending my money on sunglasses that have clip ins now
if they mist up, and are too close to my eye lids .
it seems like i either have to live with the issues, or get big money out.

i currently have some sunglasses with prescription lenses in that are reactorlight they work great.
BUT they are not cycling glasses so look a bit like raybans so offer none of the wind protection i am cravng

  • I got a pair of cheap oakley knock-offs with an Rx insert for less than £20. My local optician added prescription lenses for £90. At first I wasn't keen on how close the lenses were to my eye, but i got used to that within the first ride. The difference in vision over normal glasses was well worth it.

Support your local independent optician if you can - they have the piss taken by the NHS for children's glasses. In the last month they've just had the amount they get for children's glasses cut to £14, so they'll lose loads on each pair, even if they insist on you taking the cheapest possible. I'm willing to pay a few quid more to support someone who bends over backwards to help.
  • might be better to do that, im definately edging towards prescription lenses in glasses
    rather than a small insert.
how long do these cheap frames last though compared to expensive.
does anyone have a link to a good cheap frame i could fit my lenses into

  • I got these http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/produ ... Sunglasses
and had the inserts glazed for £15 at here http://www.ciliaryblue.com/
Absolutely brilliant, not too close to my eyes & don't fog up at all. They wrap around nicely and keeps wind, flies etc out of my eyes. I can thoroughly recommend.
  • cartainly a good lead there thanks

i went to my local place and i was told my lense prescription cant be put into Oakleys. so im back to the clip in option.
so this is a good lead, its all down to the cost of the lenses from these places.

i need to keep getting in touch and getting prices.

keep the recomendations coming guys one place is certain to do a good deal for me.

cant believe what a minefield these prescription lenses are.

i do know specsavers are a total joke with their prices

  • If you have a strong prescription, an insert or contact lenses are your only option. Wrap-around lenses simply can't be made much more than +/- 3 or 4.

I'm a -9.5 in one eye and a -9 in the other - i.e. I'm very, very myopic. I have three pairs of Kontrolsports glasses with their insert system. In decent weather I tend to wear the blue gelshocks. In winter, the yellow pair work well. They're excellent value for money - the insert system is as good as any I've seen irrespective of price and while it sits close to my eyes, I don't find this an issue. For the price, I doubt you can do much better (and they do a bundle of three pairs with an insert for about £60, think). A similar set-up from Bolle or whoever would have set me back over £300.

As noted above, Ciliaryblue do an excellent job of glazing for a very reasonable price and I'd highly recommend them.

Ditto this choakley radars £12.99 I needed new varifocals and had not had an eye test for years. I was having trouble seeing the maps in my Garmin so I got Specsavers to do two for one £69 and they fitted the second set of lenses to the clip in frames for free. I've been wearing them for a month now with no real problems. They don't steam up any more than just wearing a single lens pair. I can see the normal computer readouts fine but the maps are tiny!

I have prescription oakley jawbones. Cost me a fortune, but they are worth every penny imo. Will be getting the same next time my prescription changes.

    Try this Place http://www.extreme-eyewear.co.uk/

Simon, the manager, has been very helpful on many occasions. I have a pair of Oakley Jawbones with both photochromic and clear lenses which are outside of Oakley's +/- 4 dioptre limit. I'm pretty sure he said they were Bollé lenses that he used. I've had them for 3 years or more now and they're much better then the previous glasses I had with an insert. My biggest problem with the insert was the weird light refletions between the sunglass lens and the insert when a car drove towards you with its lights on.
