So I've not been out on the bike for about 6 weeks, while waiting for the wife to give birth, then she went over and then, well I wanted to spend some time with my little boy.

But today I got chance to get out on the bike rather than pedalling around the garage on the turbo and using Trainer Road.

So this morning I set off for Rivington, Angelzark and Belmont, typically for this time of year it was about 6 degrees, the rain and hail were pouring, the roads were like rivers, and the puddles were like ponds.

But my god how I enjoyed it! Beautiful scenery, although I was blowing out of my ar$e going over Belmont, I had a strava suffer score of 124, and I did suffer! but it was just great to get out on the bike.

Back commuting next week after my paternity leave, and I can't wait. Cycling really does get you addicted!!

No reason for the post, just thought I'd share :-)

Just a thought, what is your highest suffer score? And no I'm not willy waving :-)

  • It's when you record your heart rate through strava, you get a score depending on what zones you're heart is working in, it's also a strava premium subscription thingy as well.

Sorry for not explaining in my original post....

  • Z1, endurance 0-112bpm was 1% of my ride
Z2, moderate 112-148bpm was 14% of the ride
Z3, tempo 148-166bpm was 33% of the ride
Z4, threshold 166-184bpm was 48% of the ride
Z5, anaerobic 184+ bpm was 4% of the ride

    From the strava website

    Strava Suffer Score
The Strava Suffer Score is an analysis of your heart rate data. By tracking your heart rate through the ride and its level relative to your maximum heart rate, we attach a value to show exactly how hard you worked. The more time you spend going full gas and the longer you ride, the higher the score. Compare your Suffer Score with friends and pros, see if you can do a truly epic ride and motivate yourself to push that extra bit harder! The Suffer Score was inspired by the concept of TRIMP (TRaining IMPulse) developed by Dr. Eric Bannister.

Enter your Max HR in your Profile Settings to get the most Accurate Suffer score. Instructions can be found here.

Suffer Scores are also defined with an overall rating as follows:

Cycling Suffer Scores are broken down to as Tough, Extreme and Epic

Running Suffer Scores are an adjective and noun combination for the descriptor. The breakdown looks like:

Adjectives: "Short", "", "Long", "Very Long"

Nouns: "Slow Run", "Easy Run", "Run", "Fast Run", "Race"

For a run activity, we assign it an intensity score. The score is calculated based on your expected race time and gap (average grade adjusted speed).

The intensity score results in one of the nouns above being selected. Then depending on the distance you ran, one of the adjectives is selected. Then the pair selected; adjective and noun becomes the label you see in the analysis.
