Interested to know of the best "highest/steepest" road route up/down Butser Hill. Want to climb this hill and will be starting/finishing in Guildford. Do I just follow Hoggs Lodge Lane and Harvesting Lane, or is there a more interesting route?

  • There are 3 routes up Butser on a road bike.

Harvesting Lane is the hardest (very steep at the top), Hogs Lodge Lane is a longer steady drag up and North Lane is somewhere in between.

Descending Harvesting Lane in the wet can be very tricky as there are a couple of sharp bends that get covered in loose gravel.

If you are approaching from the north, then I would ride up Harvesting, stop at the top for some great views then descend Hogs Lodge Lane, which is fast and safe. Turn left at the end and you will find the Hampshire Hog pub to reward yourself with a nice pint! :)
  • Never tried the Hog, always gone to the Red Lion at Chalton. That's a nice pub too. http://redlionchalton.co.uk/

Thanks for the info, might try and get up Butser on Saturday, its a 78 mile round trip so have to set out early in order to get home before the light fades (no lights on the good bike).

Here the route I've got planned for tomorrow, taking in Butser Hill. There is a short cut at Peters field if its too cold or I'm not up to the full distance (77miles)

Well I did it, was an anti-climax though getting to the top, I was expecting some kind of mountainous route, was little more than a gentle climb. However the road to the top is a dead end so didn't venture up to the picnic site. Here's my route from Saturday:

You climbed Butser from the easy side, Hogs lodge lane as you point out is a gentle climb. Try ascending the hill on Harvesting lane, its a lot steeper and far more challenging than the route you rode. Fair play to you for riding all the way down from Guildford to Hampshire and back though!!

If you went up a dead end, it was probably Limekiln Lane. As Gary said, Harvesting Lane is where it's at.
Sorry to be 3 years late with this reply.
