Business Plan for "Pinarello" bike shop

A couple of days ago I went to the new cycle shop on Deansgate in Manchester, opened by Bradley Wiggins last week, which only sells Pinarello bikes and a few other things. I saw Corima wheels, Rudy Project helmets and Assos and Giordana clothing. There were no accessories or cycle parts for sale or at least I didn't see any. In my mind, it was just a showroom similar to the showrooms designed to display cars. However, the difference between this shop and the ones for cars is that there is usually a car garage behind the car showroom where you can buy spare parts and vehicles can be serviced or repaired. (I've not been to an expensive car showroom so there may be a different concept behind those.)

I can't figure out how the 'Pinarello' shop is going to work. Who is going to shop there and how are these bikes going to be kept running as well as when they leave the shop? Of course, I may have missed something fundamental about the set up.

Where will shoppers buy all the accessories and parts that need to be purchased? There is an Evans store across the road and they must be looking forward to picking up quite a bit of extra business from the things that the 'Pinarello' shop doesn't seem to stock. Maybe the store is looking to keep in business just by selling the few items that seem to be available or maybe they will be able to supply and fit anything else their customers need.

If you've been to the shop, what did you think? (There were some very nice bikes on display though.)

  • Exactly, when a bike shop doesn't smell of lubricant and the staff welcome you with immaculate hands, it is not a bike shop but a bike boutique... always follow the lubricant scent for a good shop...

There are certain parts of Manchester where following the 'lubricant scent' wont necessarily lead you to a good bike shop

I have been a mancunian for three years, can't recall bike shops around the Canal Street area... if that's what you mean...

This pinarello shop is not just any pinarello shop... hence it was opened by Mr Wiggins and also in attendance was one of the Pinarello founding family and executives from Rudy and Assos. If you're going to get the best price for a built Pinarello, it's through that shop in Deansgate, without a doubt. The owner is also the UK Authorized importer of Pinarello. So ANY shop - including Evans and your own LBS' all have to buy Pinarellos in the UK through him. This is his showroom. He also sponsored and provided the bike Martyn Ashton used in the Bike Party video etc.

Its a showroom, created in co-operation with Pinarello, Rudy and Assos. A magnificent showroom at that. Had the pleasure of attending the opening. it's never going to make a whacking profit, if any profit at all. That's what these show rooms are for - the same reason luxury care manufacturers have show and touch rooms on the Champs-Élysées.

To add to JSCL's comments, the owner owns Yellow who supply the trade with anything and everything in addition to Pinarello and Assos so I doubt there will be any problems with prospective purchasers being supplied with items not stocked by The Bikerooms.

I was walking down there this morning but I didn't notice it.

I should spend less time looking at my stupid Blackberry and more looking at bicycles that I can't afford :-).

    Next time...

and how long did you say you've worked for Yellow? what a blatant plug ...
  • i think th place is a great outlet.
if there is anyone who is serious about buying a Pinarello they would just have to go there.
the place is on 2 levels pretty much full of all the Pinarello range, in all sizes where else can you go to fell/sit try a Pinarello before you buy.

like its been said before there are all high end bikes and i bit posh, but if you are going to spoil yourself this is the place to do it.

    they offer a build service
if you were to just buy a frame , i was told they would build it with my supplid parts free of charge and also service it once a year all in the price.

i will them all the best. very friendly all the people i have spoken to .

Good luck to them. I'm sure they will do well in a big city. There was a local bike shop that opened up round here - a boutique business - just big end business and very swanky to go in - all very modern - great kit - but very little of it and all very pricey. That sadly didn't last - I think it was just the wrong area.

Erm.. no relation to Yellow other than the fact I've been a customer and happen to know the guys behind it. Other than that, you are way off the mark.

Whether they're fat dentists or not, it does produce a good market for second hand stuff 'cos whilst they can drop a gold card and buy all the kit, money doesn't buy you the legs and lungs of a cyclist so they appear barely used a year or so later.

What stinks more is the "official UK distributor" bollox - it's illegal under EU law and they try and use it to justify 20% higher prices over the rest of Europe. Phil Griffiths and Yellow have been ripping-off UK cyclists for years and people who are stupid enough to not do any research deserve the consequences.

They'll probably make a killing whilst the Wiggo/Sky/Olympic effect is still strong and then pull out as soon as sales drop once that 'effect' has subsided.
PS have not bought a new frame in over 20 years, thank christ for the 2nd hand market. Pinarello, Wilier, Colnago etc have a huge mark up because of their history. AND I am pi$$ed off at Pinarello as they have moved a lot of their production to the far east which makes the mark up between production costs and price mark exhorbitant.

As far as I'm aware, all Pinarello frames are now made in the Far East.

  • Dont see the fascination with pinarello frames at all. I know a lot of people like them but there not my bag. Hate the frame design and hate the bent forks.... Look ridiculous. BUT If they want to open a shop then why not. Even though I can't stand the frames I love the idea of a high end shop selling kit like this and IMHO there aren't enough concept stores. Thank god for the Internet, if all we had was our local bike shop then the world of cycling would be a pretty crappy place. And with the likes of shops like these opening it shows that there is finally enough interest within the sport to demand it.

Well I for one hope "the owner" does not work there as he is the most rude, obnoxious guy on the planet. Certainly would not get my business but I guess some who do not know him would buy there, but I opity them if they need support or parts.
