Hi all i recently killed my alivio 9 speed rear mech plus my rear cassette is pretty worn so.....

Thought i d treat the bike and get a new slx shadow 10 speed rear mech and xt cassette 10 speed plus a 10 speed chain.
I realise ill have to change my shifter to a 10 speed one too but these are cheap so dont mind.
Do i however have to change my front chain rings to go from 9 to 10 speed or will they work fine, if not ill stick with 9 speed thanks for your help.

It'll work fine. Not much benefit though

    No......

10 speed have very slightly different spacing, but in practice 9's work just fine.

Personally, given you are changing everything else I'd be tempted to change them so everything is new given the relatively low cost of two chainrings, unless they've been replaced fairly recently.

Hi thanks for the reply's , stuisnew im trying to keep costs down and the 2 rings on the front are only a few months old but i was only going to go 10 speed as i was renewing a few other things , i might stick with 9 speed stuff seems to be cheaper and i can swap stuff with my hardtail.

From a 9/10 point of view you'll still have a 9 speed with new rings of course!
