Who owns a shock pump?

Just curious, I've just got my first air-sprung fork and I'm sure the LBS will let me user their shock pump, but is it something where decent gains can be had by tweaking it and messing around myself? Or should I just set it to 75psi (I'm 75k and have heard that 1:1 with your weight is a good starting point regardless of the guidelines on the fork) and get on with it?
Only ask cuz they're £30 odd quid with a gauge so if I don't need one, I'd rather keep the cash, obviously...

iv got one. its fairly necessary to have one. you can try different pressures out on the trail to see what works best for you.
yes they do cost a bit but it will be worth it. i was told the best style to get is one with a release valve, but mine hasnt and i dont have a problem.2011 KHS Full Susser Carbon 29er Race BuildClank wrote:M'eh, I might just go back to zapping it with frikken lay-zur beeeems. And sharks.0 -

Def get one. It will take a fair bit of playing around to get it set up really nicely.
What forks do you have?
I have this pump. £13. It comes in various different (more expensive) guises but all the same pump and works well;

You heard wrong - this is rubbish. And the guidelines on the fork are not much better.
You need one and you need to set the sag correctly.
To be fair a good place to start might be in between this 1:1 figure and what it says on the fork!
But as CD says, set your sag correctly and tweak from there - with your shiny new shock pump
For the record my Reba's are set to +90psi and -110psi (I think) and I'm a similar weight to you in full kit. Maybe a couple kg more"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Different forks work at different pressures. I used to run just over my Fox F120's at 95 psi & my Rockshox Pikes at 70 psi and my Rockshox Lyriks at 85 psi.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

I run my bombers at about 50-60 psi I weigh 70kgCloset jockey wheel pimp whore.0

bombers are very different to RS forks etc for pressures, mine were 55psi for 90kg when i was that weight and used them, my manitou's are at 110psi my old sids similar too,
the best way is as the guys have said up there, set it at the suggested psi and then tweak it to get the right sag levels, ride it and see how you get on,
a shock pumps a good tool to have available as you never know when you might need it, its also possible to inflate a tyre with, although, it takes Bloomin Ages hahah!Timmo.

I've got the same one in the picture from rutland cycling ebay. Said it was Beto but the packaging said Raleigh, some times it let's all the air out the fork and won't work like air is escaping (might be me). When it works it's good0

You actually do really. Duel air, you need to know what is in the negative and it helps just to know how much pressure gives the sag you want.0 -
I take one with me on longer distance rides, in case I loose air or adjustments are needed. Overkill maybe but when you need one, you need one. Buy one - cheap will do, as long as it works & you tell what the psi is.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

Right, well you all convinced me, I'm not bothered about the cost if its a useful bit of kit (just didn't want to spend £30 for a one-off job)...
Bought a Topeak PocketShock DXG and seems a really nice little gadget, plenty of tweaking to be done out on the trail
Thanks chaps.
p.s. New forks are flippin' gorgeous0 -

This
...not really sure how you expect to use an air fork of shock properly without setting the sag and checking it regularly to make sure it hasn't lost any air.0
