  • The potential is there, mostly due to stormsurge caused by the very low pressure associated with this hurricane.
It's only a class 1, wind's have gusted up to 95mph. The big worry was it would wander over New York.

are they panicing unecessarily?, evacuation hubs,

No, look what happened in New Orleans.
CNN advising people not to eat food from fridge if powers been off for more than 4 hours,

OK, that one's a bit weird.

My mum, brother and step-dad are in NYC at the moment so I've very worried.

Still, you'd think that the 69 people killed by this storm in the Caribbean didn't count for anything given the amount of coverage given to them.
  • A lot of NYC area is dangerously close to sea level and the city relies 24/7 on pumps to keep the basement levels of the city from going underwater, even before there is a storm surge.

    http://geology.com/sea-level-rise/new-york.shtml

Try setting the level to 3m or 4m to see what the surge will do if it continues for too long.

Yep, clearly OTT - I mean there is only circa $12bn damage done

A bit overhyped in the media but imagine if London was threatened by a 3.3m surge?
There would be a few panicking on here.
And it could happen if a storm was to cause a surge to head down the North Sea.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Yes, but the bits of Scotland where that's true are comparatively empty. Low population densities and buildings that are low to the ground help. New York is a little different.

Don't you mean: New York, where the people are comparatively dense and a little empty whereas in Scotland we are low to the ground and live in bits of buildings?

I never knew hurricanes hit Scotland all the time. Well I guess it's possible since Scotland did used to be attached to Canada.
