Left bike in on Saturday morning at 9 o'clock to get front and rear wheel trued. No problem sir, if you want to come back on wednesday after 4 to pick it up. Sorry, did you say Wednesday? I asked was there a big back log of work waiting on the mechanics? no, thats just how long it takes. As I had a voucher for the work I had to suck it up and go with it. But out of interest I rang another shop, Slane Cycles in Belfast and was told they could do it for a tenner less and you pick the bike up in an hour.

I think ill use slane from now on.

On the subject of Slane Cycles, does anyone use them when ordering online? They are brillaint and full of knowledge when you call in, but I have heard their online ordering service is shocking.

Not good sir. A few weeks back i phoned up one of the rider owned shops here to just get them to fine tune and check my rear mech/cassette being lined up right because its my first campag groupset on a new bike and they said at worst it would be £10. I got the bike in there and they called me an hour or so later to say it was done and then charged me £15 when i picked it up even saying 'just' £15 when its clearly not the amount that i have a problem with

SUPPORT them when they do that, nah.. not always that for sure

My LBS does not have a full-time wheelbuilder so they get one in 1 day a week to do the wheel builds or awkward wheel repair jobs.

    This keeps their overheads down.

Probably because it's hardly a p1ss take as you're stating. They told you how long it would take and how much it would cost, voucher or no voucher, you had the opportunity to go elsewhere if you didn't like it... Hardly sounds like a p1ss take to me.

As for neale1978's issue, I'm afraid I could barely understand what the problem was, but I assumed you asked why it was £15 and not the £10 quoted? Or did you just pay it and then come to whinge on an internet forum about it? £15 to index your gears all done within an hour and you're still moaning...

Its simple.. When you get a quote over the phone and they give you the price it would cost at most you dont expect them to charge you more when you get there. The guy tried to justify it by telling me he had squirted some lube in the cable housing as he knew i was not happy about something. I paid and did not cause a fuss at the time as there were other people in the shop and ive only mentioned it on this topic because its relevant

Sure the first guys issue was not that bad and its best to phone places up beforehand but i can understand the good and bad things about particular bike shops thats all. I would not do that to people if they came to my shop

£15 to double check my gears and line up a rear mech is too much imo

Simple answer here, it's an easy job that only requires the turn of 3 screws at best. High low and possibly the screw to pull or let some cable through, learn to do it yourself or accept that they can charge pretty much what they like. It might only be a 15 min job however the shops still has overheads and wages to pay.

That's disgusting. Wheel truing only takes a couple minutes depending on the severity. I highly doubt they even bother checking the tension. From my experience they don't.

One of my LBS are busy and book in several bikes in a day, so they say drop it off in the morning and we run a first come first serve basis to repairs, they aim to get all done within the day. Which personally i think is great.
These mechanincs arent sat waiting for a wheel to come in to true up are they??.. or do they have 50 mechanics booking in 50 jobs a day?

Good job i dont get my customers demanding a "quick" job done there and then, i would be out of business by the end of the week!

anyway, you should think yourself lucky, I put my MTB in for a service 6 weeks ago and STILL havent got it back yet!!

Its a wonder they can stay open with these hourly rates. c'mon fess up how many of you lot would work for £15 an hour? Its simple you either pay the price or learn to do it yourself. Though personally if I agreed £10, I'd have paid £10. if they'd argued, I'd have educated them in contract law, which would have bored them half to death.
