Soreen banana loaf is arguably the greatest culinary creation ever.
  • no way, thats even worse than the ordinary one! the greatest culinary creation ever are Hostess Twinkies...thinking about it they could do the job of soreen...but then maybe just a few too many refined sugars...
  • I've just realised why "super" Tommy Voeckler is such a prolific face puller. He's trying to get the bl00dy Soreen from between his teeth.

    Back on topic ;)

For those of you who know less about bonk, its caused by your body effectively running out of fuel. Think of it like a car. No fuel, no go. Unlike a car you can't just fill up the tank and immediately set off again. It takes the human body 15-30 mins to liberate the energy in food you eat and get it to the muscles. This is why you hear the cyclists mantra "eat before you get hungry".

How do you know when and how much to eat? Your body carries enough fuel for 1.5-2 hours of moderately intense exercise. Less intense exercise utilises your fat reserves more so you can go for longer. More intense exercise burns up the fuel quicker. So, after about an hour (assuming you were fuelled to start), you should start to eat something. Small and often is the key but adjust it depending on the ride. Big effort up a hill? Eat at the top. Not eaten for a while and got a hill in a few miles? Eat something now. Don't get to 2 hours and scoff an entire energy bar expecting to be fine, you'll probably bonk anyway and your stomach may not be too happy suddenly having an entire bar to digest.

Try and take on board 60-90g carbs per hour. Sugars like glucose and fructose are easily digested and get to work quickly but don't hang around long. An energy gel is good for a quick hit but to get 60-90g you'll need 3-5 an hour! Foods like malt loaf, flap jacks, bananas, energy bars etc contain more fuel and usually release it over a longer period of time.
