OK, I've done a quick search and can't find a thread on this so...which songs have cover versions better than the original? Inspired by my ipod and listening to Killing Me Softly by the Fugees. No slight on Roberta Flack intended but I reckon the Fugees' version is better.

  • All along the Watchtower. So good Dylan does it that way now.

Word Up - Gun. Heavy Rock FTW!

Hard to Handle - Black Crowes. See above.

Make you feel my love - ANYONE other than Dylan (is this a theme?) Adele's is nice - I liked the video.

Hound Dog - Elvis - not a hamburger in sight!

Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson - storming video!

So there you have it, this thread has been covered before.

Nothing to see here, move along.
  • hehe that means this thread is a cover version of the original - I preferred it when it was indie. :D

Well as usual, I missed it first time round.

k d lang's version of Hallelujah, different and better than any of the Cohen performances for me, although he does a fine take too. Saw her live, not really expecting to like the show that much, and was floored by how much better she is on stage than recording. One of the few performances I've ever seen I'd genuinely call "awesome".

OK so some of these are subjective - I don't much l like the Iggy Pop over Richard Berry or Rod Stewart over Van Morrison although I can see how some might prefer the cover - but Black Crowes better than Otis Redding is just plain wrong !

She doesn't do anything new with the song, but this is a HELL of a performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_NpxTWbovE

I think music is extremely subjective. I think it also depends on your mood. If you're happy and upbeat a song like Somebody by Depeche Mode would bring your spirit down, like wise if you're a bit sad a song like Do ya think i'm sexy might be slightly irritating.

Oooh, tough to argue. Had forgotten he'd sung it that long ago. Even on yoochoob, cr@p PC speakers and with no video that's still a mesmerising performance.

    No x 1000.

Faith No More have always had a knack for cover versions. I prefer their versions of 'Easy' and 'I started A Joke' to the originals. While I'm on the subject of the BeeGees, Al Green's cover of 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' is beautiful.
