Halfords pricing is very dodgy, they put the price up to some ridiculous level for a week then they can sell it at the normal price and claim some massive reduction, just within the law and no more. I bought one bike from them and it was a disaster, in the end I took a night to completely strip the thing and reassemble it, the build quality was shocking.Disc Trucker

To be fair the bike is BUILT by Merida who make millions of bikes a year including low to mid end Specialised, while you can Blame halfords for the PDI work (bars and stem, wheels, pedals and checking gear setup), the build is down to Merida.
The PDI can I agree be hit amd miss, try and talk to whoever is 'selling' you the bike, guage their knowledge and experience and try and get them to commit to doing your PDI, ride it before you leave up and down through the gears, if it's not right, don't leave the store!
At £279 its a good buy, at £400 it's never worth it!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Both my current bikes are carrera and other than the setup are and have provided 4000 miles of trouble free riding, both were 265 quid (Carrera vulcan, carrera TDF). Did my own "setup" once I was home.
So 279..buy it.0
