This was my first road bike, bought it when I was 18 in 1996. Giant CFR 3, carbon frame with aluminium lugs, unusual in it's day and very unusual now. Some people think it is steel when they first see it.
It originally came with Rigida semi-aero wheels on Shimano RSX hubs, Shimano RSX/RX100 groupset (2x7 speed). I didn't use it for many years but it was kept covered in the garage. Recently got back into cycling so got it out, still a nice ride but found steep hills (10% plus gradient) challenging on it with what I presumed was a 53/39 front chainset and 12-26 out back. When I stripped it down the chainset was actually a 52/42, no wonder the hills were tough!
The front shifters were getting very dodgy so I decided to rebuild with Campag Centaur mechs, brakes and chainset, Veloce Ultra Shift ergo levers (as they give 5 down/3 up shifting unlike the new power shift levers) and Fulcrum R7 wheels from my other bike. Replaced the stem with a NOS 3T quill and Deda handlebars.
Took it out for a spin this afternoon, feels really tight and the shifting is smooth and precise, very pleased overall!
