Brake Recommendations (XC Hardtail)

Looking for some new brakes for my hardtail. Has been a mishmash of an ageing Magura Julie rear and Hope M4 front since 2006. Both brakes still work fine and have been ultra reliable but as I am revamping the bike I figure its time to go for a new set up.
I have used Shimano Deore - reliable, solid, bit hard to modulate - and Avid Juicy 3's - not the most powerful and a bit noisy - and Avid Elixir Carbons - firm, adjustable, silly plastic lever, tend to squeal - at various times and my preference is toward the Shimano.
I am in BC so limited access to places like Rose and the other euro companies. Can get Merlin and CRC to deliver here (maybe wiggle not checked).
I have heard good things about current XT brakes. (anyone know the number of the really good ones?) Any other recommendations? Formula? Hayes?

I can't rate my 2013 SLX brakes highly enough... Good solid build quality, great stopping power, great price.0

Another vote for SLX M666 here. Prefer the matt look of the reservoirs to the chrome effect of the XT's. Cheaper too. And, i got mine from Merlin.0

Deore M596 brakes are one of the best I've used for the price. Miles miles miles better than my Elixir R's.0
-
The 596's are the newer version and do look a step up from my older model deores.
Meant to ask - the XT's have the Ispec compatible thing going on - I have no experience of it but I assume it allos shifters and brakes to be co-mounted on same clamp yes? I am prob going with XT shifters so this could be an option to declutter.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
Have a look at the Magura MT2.0
-
I checked them out - they are a good price, the right colour and I always liked my Julie's - I take it they are good performers?Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

I've got Elixir R's and I've had no end of problems with them so am looking at replacing them. The Internet and more importantly my friends how have them reccomend Shimano so I'll probably get SLX M666/M675 which are virtually identical to XT apart from the bite adjust but I'm also considering Deore M596 which have the same lever as SLX but a different caliper although are meant to perform just as well as SLX/XT.0

The Deores are ridiculously good and therefore amazing value for money.Family, Friends, Fantastic trails - what else is there

XT 785 here - excellent.
I had the older Deores which were also good.
Can't comment on SLX.0 -

For the price it's gotta be the SLX M675 from Rose - in stock now, £120 delivered (to Europe). Get someone in Europe to order them for you then send them on to you, no?"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

I am looking at an SLX groupset with Brakes from bike-discount that fits the bill. The addition of the brakes is a very reasonable price step from without so that works for me!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0

Can you send me a link to that please. Could be interested in that myself..."Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Pretty amazing price really. But I'm after some specific bits i.e. 22/32 upfront, 11-36 out back. And medium cage, clutch mech"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

But if you'd ordered M785's they'd have charged you £200"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

M870's or M780's (presumably).......M8XX is Saint!
Free upgrade, I'd take that as the ice fin is more suited to those who get brakes hot (so not XC then!)Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Yeah - they're not showing M780's in stock now so they must've made an error accepting your order and gave you a free upgrade...good work
EDIT - sorry, they are showing stock so maybe just sent out the wrong ones?..whichever way, win!"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes
