Dont shoot me down but has anyone ever contemplated or tried a blood transfusion or EPO more out of curiosity than anything else?

I am actually contemplating a blood transfusion to see what all the fuss is about. Now just need to find a quack willing to do it.

Why don't you do something meaningful and go and donate blood instead of posting rubbish.

    Yeah, that's DDD's job.

On a serious note, you must be crackers to even contemplate something like that as you say '...to see what all the fuss is about'

Sorry but can someone explain why this is such a bad thing to suggest?

    I am being genuine here.

If you happen to go ahead with it, you won't notice a leap in performance. Because that clearly is where your curiosity lies.

The EPO is effective when the athlete tries to push the boundaries, unless you're close to pushing the boundaries then this wouldn't be a worthwhile experiment to beat your PB to the chippy.

  • There was a great article by an American journalist that was posted somewhere. He went and tried everything. Human growth hormone, Steroids, EPO. Was really interesting, think it might be in Pro-race, I shall go and have a look.

I think as Vaughters of Garmin said, EPO doesnt make you an amazing cyclist, you are 98% of the way there already, it just gives you the extra push. Much as Take Turns has suggested.

After trying a combination of drugs, the journalist said that EPO definately aided him to climb more effectively, but its biggest benefit for him was about recovery. He cycled 140 miles one day, and got up the next day feeling totally fresh and rested and did the same thing again. He said that steroids was the scariest as it messed with his emotions and chemical balance most noticably, claimed it was like injecting your body with a stampeding bull.

To say that this post is idiotic is an insult to idiots everywhere.

That said, you won't notice a difference. The gains the pros were getting were minute and incremental at best. Keep in mind that there is probably only around a 1% difference in ability between the front and rear of the peloton, so riders and teams were looking for every advantage possible. Even eeking out a quarter of a percent is huge from an elite standpoint, but won't be noticed by the average cyclist.

Think about it from an aero standpoint. Companies spend big bucks in R&D just to squeeze out a couple watt savings at 40+kph over the course of 6 hours. You really think that you'd see a difference with that sort of product? Nope.

Keep in mind that these juiced up dopers are still elite athletes. They didn't become elite athletes by doping, they did it the same way as everyone else, dedication and hard work. They doped because they were greedy and short-sighted and would stop at nothing to gain that little bit extra.

There is a study, and its bloody fascinating.

For anyone to imply that it is a stupid post only goes to show either your arrogance or ignorance on the matter.

Depends what you want to achieve. If you want to do it to cheat in bike races, it's bad because it's err...cheating.

If just to improve your strava times etc. go for it. You can keep your blood in the fridge at home

  • Jesus f**king christ. I either misread that the first time or OP has changed it. Yeah, strong idea mate, PEDs are totally something to be played around with due to curiosity. After you re done you could have a dabble with crack and heroin, I hear they are very moreish and hold a certain curiousty factor.
