Easy to do, although I would use a smaller blade like a stanley knife myself.A Flock of Birds

All the time, Stanley blade.0

A cheap set of tine watchmakers screwdrivers are handy for things like this.
And watchmaking naturally.I don't do smileys.

cheers - so it is better to insert the blade between the seal and outer race or the seal and inner race?
will have a go at reviviing lumpy BB30 bearings on Sat when it is light.0 -
Just prise it off any how you can and try not to bend it0

I do it with all of my bearings, pop the seals off and fill with grease pop the seals back on,
i use the very very fine mini screwdriver in the sets you can get.Timmo.

I use a safety pin and work from the inner race as it's less likely to bend the seal. Never had any problems.

BTW if you don't have a small grease gun, fill a 20ml syringe full of grease, makes packing the bearing very easy.0

I read somewhere you're meant to prise it off from the outer edge. Syringes for grease are great also.0

thx for replies - it is quite easy, used a tiny watchmakers screwdriver and prised up at the inner edge - the seal is metal with a rubber coating and rubber edges so lifts off easily,
repacked the bearing but RH is not smooth so I ordered a pair of ceramic hybrid from china as I reckon I'll need to change it .... no doubt there will be post on how to replace BB30 bearing (tapping out should be easy but getting them in square may casue some head scratching).0 -
So, which bearings do you use to make all this faff worth while?Cotic Soul 26 inch. Whyte T1300
-
don't know what make the bearings are but guessing it is OEM as fitted by Cannondale - have light grey seals, not the marine mammal, if that helps.
seems the faff was worthwhile, took the bike for a spin and just checked the crank and it spins freely now!!! previously it wouldn't .
but I am getting a creak when pedalling that will need investigating, could be bearings causing that, not sure what it is yet.0 -
As a matter of interest, when the bearings are finally goosed do you buy the something like SKF at £15 each or the el cheapo ones at £7.50 for 5 and just wiz them after a few months?0

Generally often yes but not always but probably maybe. SKF are good bearings. The el cheapo ones maybe good.I don't do smileys.

You can get SKF/FAG/EZO cheaper than £15 each, search for Katec Prorider bearings on ebay or how about ceramic hybrid for £8 each http://www.bearings-online.co.uk/item/B ... 424_0.html0 -
