II have got a Mavic hub and an XT cassette to go on it.

I understand i need a spacer so i bought one (M10/HG Cassette Spacer) but the splines don't fit the splines on the hub.

Looking at the instruction there are 3pictures of hubs.

M10 - M10/HG9 - and ED10

I'm not sure what one i have, it is one of these two - M10 - M10/HG9

I have fitted the cassette without spacer but the running of the chain is atrocious.

What am i doing wrong???

You can see the pictures. We can't.
So all I can suggest is try turning it over.

But the splines for all Shimano freehubs are the same, AFAIK.

A genuine Mavic M10/HG Cassette Spacer. Tried turning it over. It just doesn't fit. It is a 10 speed XT cassette.

These wheels have been a total pain in the arse from day one!

Have you tried matching the wide tooth on the spacer to the wide gap on the freehub?

I just fitted a stnd 7 speed (cassette on an 8 speed hub) spacer on my Crossrides.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    My pleasure.
But I think retard is too harsh.
