Kimmage's moobs appear to have fallen out.

What is the "best practice" model for running a similar sporting body? Is there any other sport(s) that the reformed UCI should be based on?

No. This is the most important question and the answer is the most distrubing.

The trouble is that each sporting body holds a monopoly of power. Without competition there is no incentive to improve processes and corruption becomes rife. It is not too dissimilar from one-party states who equally hold a monopoly with the consequent inefficiency (corruption).

European Football is fortunate in having several leagues competing against each other to create the most commercially successfully product (and I guess this corresponds to cycling Race Organisers...). However, I doubt anyone is going to recommend FIFA as a template for a well run sports governing body.

I think a good first step would be a body separate from the UCI with the responsibility of running pro-cycling. An organisation with sole focus on this side of cycling would be a start on the road to better overall governance, much like Premier League vs FA in UK.
  • If this article is anything to go by, it looks like reform is not high on Pat McQuaid's or the UCI's agenda.

There really is no chance for the sport to progress under the UCI regime if this is their mindset.

Fat Pat's attitude can basically be summarised in two words: 'Fook off'

Open Letter to Pat McQuaid from Greg LeMond

Can anyone help me out? I know this sounds kind of lame but I am not well versed in social marketing. I would like to send a message to everyone that really loves cycling. I do not use twitter and do not have an organized way of getting some of my own "rage" out. I want to tell the world of cycling to please join me in telling Pat McQuaid to f##k off and resign. I have never seen such an abuse of power in cycling's history- resign Pat if you love cycling. Resign even if you hate the sport.
Pat McQuaid, you know damn well what has been going on in cycling, and if you want to deny it, then even more reasons why those who love cycling need to demand that you resign.

I have a file with what I believe is well documented proof that will exonerate Paul.

Pat in my opinion you and Hein are the corrupt part of the sport. I do not want to include everyone at the UCI because I believe that there are many, maybe most that work at the UCI that are dedicated to cycling, they do it out of the love of the sport, but you and your buddy Hein have destroyed the sport.

Pat, I thought you loved cycling? At one time you did and if you did love cycling please dig deep inside and remember that part of your life- allow cycling to grow and flourish- please! It is time to walk away. Walk away if you love cycling.

As a reminder I just want to point out that you recently you accused me of being the cause of USADA's investigation against Lance Armstrong. Why would you be inclined to go straight to me as the "cause"? Why shoot the messenger every time?

Every time you do this I get more and more entrenched. I was in your country over the last two weeks and I asked someone that knows you if you were someone that could be rehabilitated. His answer was very quick and it was not good for you. No was the answer, no, no , no!

The problem for sport is not drugs but corruption. You are the epitome of the word corruption.

You can read all about Webster's definition of corruption. If you want I can re-post my attorney's response to your letter where you threaten to sue me for calling the UCI corrupt. FYI, I want to officially reiterate to you and Hein that in my opinion the two of your represent the essence of corruption.

I would encourage anyone that loves cycling to donate and support Paul in his fight against the Pat and Hein and the UCI. Skip lunch and donate the amount that you would have spent towards that Sunday buffet towards changing the sport of cycling.

I donated money for Paul's defense, and I am willing to donate a lot more, but I would like to use it to lobby for dramatic change in cycling. The sport does not need Pat McQuaid or Hein Verbruggen- if this sport is going to change it is now. Not next year, not down the road, now! Now or never!

People that really care about cycling have the power to change cycling- change it now by voicing your thought and donating money towards Paul Kimmage's defense, (Paul, I want to encourage you to not spend the money that has been donated to your defense fund on defending yourself in Switzerland. In my case, a USA citizen, I could care less if I lost the UCI's bogus lawsuit. Use the money to lobby for real change).

If people really want to clean the sport of cycling up all you have to do is put your money where your mouth is.

Don't buy a USA Cycling license. Give up racing for a year, just long enough to put the UCI and USA cycling out of business. We can then start from scratch and let the real lovers in cycling direct where and how the sport of cycling will go.

    Please make a difference.

Interesting to see the likes of the riders union, the CPA, calling for tougher bans:
'The rider's association CPA has also sent out a letter to McQuaid and the media, targeting not the UCI, but demanding that the managers and team staff that have been involved in doping affairs be excluded from the sport. "The riders demand that the whole [Armstrong] dossier be investigated and that all those who are guilty be named. Too often, only the riders implicated in doping scandals have been punished. The time has come for all those who work in the cycling world who have faulted be prosecuted in the same way," stated Gianni Bugno, head of the association, pointing at certain managers and team doctors who continue to work in pro cycling despite their illicit past.'

There's also rumblings about tightening up on the use of TUEs, expecially for corticoids. Quote from Nico Roche here, and also a separate article quoting Madiot and French Cycling Fed doctor
    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/french- ... oid-checks

I remember Michael Hitchinson tweeting after the Worlds ITT that he'd been asked if he had a TUE and the officials were taken aback when he said no...inferring that that being presented with a lot of TUEs was the norm...

Haha yes, but I think boxing's issues go far beyond having 4 main governing bodies...

I am not suggesting that multiple governing bodies for each sport is the way forward, just that a single governing body is not without flaws itself
  • BBC reporter tweeted that there was an attempt by 'a small number' of committee members at ydays meeting to persuade Fat Pat to force Verbruggen to step down, but the effort didnt get enough support

Some good points here, ostensibly from a range of European newspapers (incl. The Times) but also interesting is the fact that the newspapers are all closely linked to the major race organisations such as ASO, RCS, etc.
  • Message from Brian Cookson today:

    http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/articl ... -Cookson-0

Quite interested in some specific paras e.g.:

It will also consider how the UCI might move to prevent those with a history of involvement in doping from being involved in the management of any professional or national team. I personally would like to see this extended to the media and race organisations. I find it hard to understand how any convicted and unrepentant doper can be given any credence as a commentator, journalist, or VIP.

    and

Finally, to add to this, I guarantee unequivocally to the members of British Cycling that I will use my influence through the UCI Management Committee to ensure that our International Federation operates with integrity, honesty and transparency. If I am not able to do that from inside the organisation, I will resign

Some good words there from Cookson (just posted it in the main LA thread so apologies to everyone for the duplication).
  • Quotes from Cookson

WADA input to the panel of 3 - which might help safeguard against another Verbruggen crony being given the gig

    "'Nothing will be off limits.'

'"We are expecting everybody from Hein Verbruggen and Pat McQuaid downwards to be completely transparent at all times.”

    Let's see.

Nice to get a reply email from British Cycling referring to Brian Cookson's recent statement.

Pleased to see the following para:

"The UCI, in particular its former President Hein Verbruggen and its current President Pat McQuaid have received considerable criticism of their handling of these matters. Certain serious allegations have been made which have caused widespread concern. I am pleased that, at its meeting last week, the UCI Management Committee agreed to an independent review of all matters relevant to the current crisis, including those allegations. I understand that both of them will fully co-operate with that review."
  • Whatever you personally think of Millar, he's absolutely correct. The UCI think they can do diddly and just ride this out, and people will forget - because that's what they've always got away with before

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/no ... ar-cycling

Despite the UCI saying that WADA would be involved in the selection process for the independent commission, as of the weekend WADA hadnt been contacted by them about it. Clearly Fat Pat and Hein know that the latter's personal mates list wouldnt make it past WADA's scrutiny
  • UCI just announced that John Coates of CAS, to decide on the 3-person independent commission:
    - Chair will be a senior lawyer
    - forensic accountant
    - experienced sports administrator

    Interesting....

EDIT: new thread opened for this
