Ignorance or Arrogance from other riders

In the last week I have been out and about in the Basingstoke area. On my last two rides I have passed many a rider in the opposite direction than I. I smile, wave a hand and if I'm not breathing out my backside will say a hello. I can honestly say that only 3 have acknowledged my existence. 4 if you count the fella in a white jersey black tights who rode Huish Lane yesterday morning: http://app.strava.com/segments/1441705 . He looked at me as if I had a second head when I said Good Morning.
Perhaps its just me, but being I originate from well north of the southern region I now live it still baffles me how people will either blank you or glare.
Lighten up folks your face won't crack or am I breaking some southern code of ethics.

Hahaha! Old topic, this one. Its the same in Plymouth where I am. I say hello to everyone cycling, 90% won't acknowledge EVER. I see some same cyclists every day, and they still won't speak. The other day, I was waiting at lights, roadie in front (blanked me), me next (roadie), overweight older mtb'r decides not only will he not speak, he'll push in front of both of us, squeezing past to get to the front. Lights change, he's blocking the junction, won't look over or speak.....
I run a lot as well, in the same area, and nearly every runner will say hi.
Never going to get over this, I just stick with saying hello and they can all wallow in their own misery. Cheer up, you could be in a car!0 -
Here we go again, and theres another one of these already running!0

Lol I ended up shouting 'morning' everyday for a week! as i'd passed the same guy every day for months he now says hello when I see him but maybe just out of fear. I find the same with runners, maybe I look like a mugger or a politician!Ribble Stealth

Don't let it get to you and don't let it stop you from saying hi,
I always try to at least give "the nod" but sometimes I miss it when others say hello or nod to me. Not because I'm being rude but because I'm concentrating/hurting0 -

I take it you prefer to say nothing then :?:Don't call me sir I work for a living0 -
I always love this topics of how the 'polite' reach out for personal interaction is ignored, feelings are hurt and the non-responding 3rd party is deemed ignorant or arrogant or worse. It's like some pathetic love story.
You said hi, they didn't, get over yourself.0 -
i blame strava
seriously though do you wave to everyone in the car when your driving down the road? I'll be polite when on my bike but wouldn't let it bother me if i didnt get acknowledged0 -

Just go and read the many threads of this ilk already running rather than start another FFS0 -

shall we have a sweepstake on how many pages this will get to?
when walking do you say hello to everyone you pass on the street?! must take you hours to get anywhere!
i nod/say hello to all cyclists, sometimes they return the favour sometimes not, doesnt affect the outcome of my day either way! i just don't get the problem people have with this?www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -
Hey RuleBritania! I'm also from Basingstoke & cycling around Ramsdell, Sherbourne St John, Route 23.
It must have been a one off as I often see people out of mixed levels and they mostly always give a "morning, hello" and a wave.0 -

Classic car owners, Motorcyclists nod, dog walkers say hello, runners nod/say hi, lorry drivers, bus drivers and those wearing the same teams colours when not on match day in another area say "alreet mate" if your in a Newcastle Falcons top.
People with a common interest enjoying the same thing usually acknowledge one another. It does not as you say "bother" me. I'm sure but it does make me wonder.Don't call me sir I work for a living0 -

bothered you enough to start a thread about it though
try a quick search to see how many times it has been covered or you could try asking if its ok to wear team kit while out on your bike :roll:0 -
Does this happen amongst roadies ? Where can I read more about it ?Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved0 -
Yep, this topics been done to death.
Some will acknowledge you, some won't. Over time, you just come to accept this.
I live in Bagshot and one of my routes takes me to Hamptopn Court. I do find people get snootier the closer I get to that area (through Walton, Molesey etc.). But then I guess there are plently of people who are very up themselves around those parts. I should know, I used to live over that way.
There's nowt as queer as folk!0 -
I think to be waving, smiling and exchanging cheery banter with all and sundry is likely to get you certified really quickly ...0

Me too. Whats Route 23 ?0 -
I can say with all honesty that I have never had a bad interaction with another cyclist, and if the day comes and I get a stare or weird look, we'll who cares. Nobody has to be kind and nice to me and make me feel all warm and fluffy inside just because they like the same sport as I do.0
-
I wish more people was like you on the roads! Nowt wrong with being friendly with fellow cyclist if you ask me, in fact it often brightens my day cycling here in London!
I always wave or give a nod to a cyclist who does the same to me, and for some reason when ever i spot a fellow cyclist on another Ribble bike i always make a point of saying hello! But for some reason fellow Ribble cyclists generally always say hello if they see me first!0 -

You can wear team kits? I never knew! ooh ooh I must get a yellow jersey for my slow a$s.....
Although my actual Q is it Ignorance or Arrogance??
I've been pondering what bike to upgrade to next year so I may go for a Ribble only cos I might get a "Hello".Don't call me sir I work for a living0 -
It really has got nothing to do with which end of the country you are in  The rude riders are everywhere. But, fortunately, the polite ones out number them...I think
And as for forum Stazi on here, if someone wants to start a new thread that has been done before then so bit it, just ignore it if you don't like it.“If you do what always do, you'll get what you always get.”0 -

don't sweat about it, some will give a wave or nod their heads and say hi, and some just won't, it's their problem not yours ..0

Route 23 runs I believe from Southampton through Winchester, Basingstoke to Reading.
I genrally pick it up in the War Memorial Park and carry it through all the country lands and takes you directly into the Oracle in Reading. Its all off main roads and signposted all the way.
Very lovely route taking in all the countryside & roman ruins through Silchester0
