Bike fitting

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a bike fitter? I've read about Retul, but surely it is just data gathering, you still need skills to fit the rider to the bike. Has anyone actually paid for bike fitting and found it beneficial? Anyone had a negative experience of fitting? I'm a tester, but I ride a road bike a lot too.

I never seem to be able to get my cleats quite right, and was thinking of paying for a fitting service. I'm in the north, so wanted something local(ish), but I'd travel if it meant getting the job done right.

Cheers

Russell

Not sure how far north you are but I used Epic Cycles who are now in Ludlow. Excellent service.

I had a Retul fitting earlier in the year and it was excellent. Made a big difference to both comfort and (surprisingly) speed. You're right in thinking that the Retul approach is purely measurement - it allows the fitter more dynamic information about the bike fit - what each of your joints are doing while you're pedalling. However, it is only ever going to be as good as the guy fitting it.

I used a company in Milton Keynes called Velomotion for both road and tri bike and the fitter, John Dennis, was excellent. Spent quite a while moving cleats, saddle height and position, bars (particularly on the tri bike) until it both looked right in terms of Retul measurements and felt right to me.

  • Was that with Bike Science? How was it? They appear to be the nearest Retul fitter to me.

result was worth it, amazing how minute changes to position can get your legs working much more efficiently. I would say it was a professional, not over friendly approach, I chose the all day/sportive fit and it has definatly made that type of riding more comfortable and efficient. I think the guy Andy Sedgwick is probably more at home with triathletes/racers. Bottom line is yes it made a noticable difference to me. Cowleys in Northallerton do a 'measured' fit cost is similar may or may not be better. I know they take longer over set up, but that could be because retul is a more efficient use of technology.

  • That's really helpful, thank you.
