Getting to Highgate

Supposed to be meeting some people for beers tomorrow afternoon near Highgate. I was thinking "why not ride?". Looking at it it seems fairly simple: A217 (probably cut through Sutton), A24 to Clapham, A3 to E&C, A201, jog over to the A1 and we're there (about 23 miles).
Thing is, I don't know That London very well. Anyone got any advice? Is it sensible to be riding back in the dark while drunk? It has to be safer than the Northern Line.

Ride, drink, short ride (downhill!) after to Highbury & Islington, train with bike to West Croydon, sober up a little, short ride to Sutton. Simples.0

Actually, from West Croydon, probably ride to East Croydon, train to Tadworth.0 -
