Hope pro hubs -play

Technical novice here!
My wheels both have some lateral play in them, more in the rear which is quite pronounced. With the bike still if I wiggle the wheel I can feel 2 or 3 mm of lateral play if that makes sense.
I am guessing this means I have Bearing issues? quick google shows me that a pair of replacement hope cartridges is roughly £60! Is there a cheaper alternative? Will I notice the difference?
Is there anything else to check as a possible cause?

You should check the caps have not gone loose.
Hope bearings should last a long time... 20 K miles or so, maybe a bit less if neglectedleft the forum March 20230 -
