Come out riding up and down the Kentish bergs. If no one else says hello, I will. In fact, I am working on how laconic I can be and still elicit a reaction. Subtle nod is the current greeting, but I also like to try the 'North Yorkshire land rover defender driver' greeting occasionally: one finger off the bar.0

Loretta Damage wrote:I gave the "bloke nod" to every cyclist coming towards on today's ride, exactly nil response!! Is it because I'm riding a Trek?
no it's because people are arrogant and have little time for others these days. i always acknowledge other riders whether going up or down hill, road or mtb, but probably only get a 50% response.
i call them a w4nker and carry on enjoying my ride.0 -

I nod or do a small wave when I see fellow roadies, and 8 times out of 10 I get a wave or nod back.
Slightly OT -
Was lucky enough to cycle past what I think was a good portion of the Euskadi team the day before the first day of the Tour of Britain. I had left work at Felixstowe and was cycling back to Ipswich and they were coming the other way on the old Ips-Fxt road. I gave them a huge thumbs up and a big smile (I was trying to TT my route as its dead on 10 miles so had little breath left for any words of good luck), and to a man they all waved back and a couple even said hello. I bloody had wings on my feet for the rest of the journey and a big smile on my face.
If the pros take the time to acknowledge a rank amateur blowing out his arse on a secondhand Ebay road bike, there's no excuse for the rest of us.0 -
I've read these moans about ignorant roadies loads of times on here and had never experienced it. On the rural section of my commute I've seen the same 3 or 4 guys every morning I've ridden this year and we always acknowledge each other. However, in the last few weeks I have regularly seen 3 other people and none of them return the acknowledgement. It doesn't bother me to be honest but I now make a point of waving to them in the hope it annoys them0

I find it's roughly 50/50. Quite often on my route a lot of ys acknowledge each other, but then lots don't. I think it does just depend on the person. They might not just being anti social, they just might like to concentrate & kerp to themself. It tends to be riders out on a training/leisure ride, rather than those on a commute. I also find that during commute hours people are less likely to respond, i think people just want to survive the vommute & get home!!
Also, i think what sometimes happens is that when you have waved, nodded, said 'hi', or lifted a finger, the other rider may only have seen this at the moment you pass & then don't have time to respond. This has happened to me a few times & i felt bad about it,!0 -
acknowleding people o a commute? seriously? think they have better things to do tbh. on a weekend/leisure ride, fair enough. i do, but dont care if others do or not. some people are in the zone, concentrating, not fussed about it. each to their own, not the end of the world if someone ignores you.0

Is there an echo around here?0

Speaking of cyclists being their own worst enemy I was staggered by the amount of people I saw on my commute home last night without lights. In one case I saw someone riding in dark clothes, no lights, headphones in and he was hoping on and off the footway to avoid traffic then jump a set of lights on one of the busiest roads in Cardiff. Do some people really think they are invincible or are they just thick as ****?0
