Shimano compatibility

I have just purchased a used set of Shimano Ultegra 6600 10 speed double shifters and see that the new 6700 rear mech is cheaper than the 6600. I have looked at the Shimano compatibility chart but cant work out if these will work.

So, to summarise, will a 6700 rear mech work with 6600 shifters please?

Thanks.

    Yes, it'll be fine.
The pull ratio, etc is exactly the same so it'll index perfectly.

I'm running 6600 shifters with a 6700 front mech, and according to Shimano's docs it will work but is 'less than optimum' or similar wording.

I think in practice it means that as the 6700 shifters have under-the-bartape cabling, the cable friction is greater, so the 6700 front mech has a stronger return spring in it than 6600, to pull the mech back when the shifters click and release a bit of cable - if that's the case, running 6600 mech with 6700 shifters would be the problem, not t'other way round.

I bet the situation with the rear mech is similar - so you'll be fine

Thanks. Does the 6600 not run under the bar tape as well?

Damn...I only bought them for the internal cable routing and the ebay seller told me that they were internal.

Off for a battle to get my money back !

Ok, got a refund from ebay, so have now bought the 6700 to get the under-tape cabling. Now stuck with some 6600 brakes. Will these work please ?

Yes they will. Shimano say they they are not compatible because the 6700 and 6600 pull ratios are different but they will work, just not with the amount of modulation that Shimano designed!

6700 STI/calipers are designed with more cable pull than 6600, so 6600 levers with 6700 callipers will equal slightly softer levers but should be okay in practice. Pad clearance will be a tad less, so just watch that.
