2nd Hand Brakes

Looking to buy a set of 2nd brakes with a budget of around £90. Was thinking along the lines of Shimano SLX but not sure how good they are or what other brakes could be bought for around this price.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

  • I bought some slxs last year, been superb! Really good for the money :) I hear the newer deores are also very good, and nearly within budget new which may be worth considering?
  • For £120 you can buy brand new SLX from Germany delivered. For around £70 you can get brand new Deores delivered.
Personally id get either of the above and not risk 2nd hand, because for the price you want its really not worth it!

Well I just put an XT lever and XT/XTR (both direct mount, no adaptors needed) caliper combo on my bike, cost me £90 but have a front set left over from what I got to sell on, plus my old ones and expect to end up paying no more than about £20 to have upgrdaded from Juicy 5's.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I would recommend saving up a little more if you can and going new. Even new deore brakes work really well these days. But if you are going used I would stick to shimano and have a good look at them before you part with your cash. Avid, Formula, Magura and Tektro are a minefield of problems and really not worth the risk of going used.

Is it possible to get XT or XTR second hand for my budget? Don't mind fitting new pads or bleeding if needed.

Look on eBay, Pinkbike, Classified's here etc.

2nd hand you can pretty much get anything for any price but what condition is it in is the question.

As above for that budget I'd get a set of new Deore's or beg/borrow/steal/save a little extra and get some new SLX. But always still worth looking on eBay etc to see if any bargains come up

There's a set of great condition SLX brakes in the classifieds on here for £100, very tempted. Also a set that have new pads and freshly bled for £95, again very tempted.

SLX are excellent stoppers for sure. But as above you can get a new pair delivered for £125

If you can bleed them yourself you can get calipers or levers on their own very cheap, then just get hoses and put together, if I hadn't wanted a PM front caliper I would only have spent £47 on putting together M775 XT levers (servo wave) and XTR calipers with a new hose set.
