Have found the XT's at Rose Bikes for £125 ish and can get a set of Hope Race X2's for the £130 mark.
Which set does everyone reckon? Or am i being silly and should keep my Saint M810's
Cheers

If your brakes work well, why change? Or are you wanting to lose some weight?0
-
The saints are good, but weigh an absolute ton. Will the X2's have enough power to stop me (80kg) 203mm front and 180 rear?
Cheers0 -
Probably, but they have a lot less power than the Saint.0
-
what would you do if you were in my position. I mainly ride trail centres and off-piste stuff.0
-
Work out how much weight you set to lose to start.0
-
Would be saving around the 400g mark0
-
Could it be done elsewhere on the bike or less?0
-
tbh, considering the bike is an orange 5, I'd rather have it a little heavier than to make it more bombproof. Think ill stick with the saints as they are perfectly good
Cheers for the help.0 -

I'd go for the XT's - My SLX (M675) have plenty stopping power (2x 180mm rotors, and I'm prob just under 80kg with full riding kit on)
On a side note - if you wanna sell the M810's I could be interested (got Elixir R's on the DH bike and they're poor to say the least)"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

We really should just put up a sign on this forum, the new Shimano brakes from deore upwards are the best out there by some margin, pick which ones fit your budget, buy, fit, forget, ride. Its that easy.
my X2's were no where near as powerful as my new xt's, I actually made money from replacing both sets of hopes on my bike with xt's.
At 80kg, you really don't need all that power, you're not exactly mega heavy, so xt's with 180mm rotors all round would be more than adequate.0 -
In your opinion ;-). Formula and Maguras offerings are excellent too, the latter are good weights for the cash.0

I have older XT's on mine (M775) and can put it on the front wheel with one finger on 160mm discs and I come in at just under 80Kg in my birthday suite, you only need bigger discs to control temperatures and the Saint caliper doesn't actually help with that.
There is a good market for the M810 systems/calipers so I'd say go for it.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

Formulas squeel like hell and the pads last 5 minutes, and my previous experience of magura was patchy at best. Add in the fact you can get a set of xt's for less than one equivilant formula or magura and the deal looks even sweeter to go for xt's0 -

What are you jibbering on about now?
Surely any squeal or pad life issues are down to the pads and not the brakes? Or at the very least, whoever set them up.
My old Formulas on the Edison were superb. Used them with Kevalr pads from SS and they never had any of the problems you described until I tried a set of sintered pads, which sounded like they were made from live pigs and sandpaper.
I'll still be swapping the current elixirs for some XTs when I get round to it to see what all the fuss is about though0 -
What on earth are you on about you just make stuff up.0

You tried the new MT2? Don't get me wrong, Shimano make some very good stuff, but they are not the lightest, and other options are worth considering.0 -

Yes, I'm sure this sweeping statement is true of all Formula brakes*

Out of interest what the weight diff between the MT2's and the XT's (or SLX) ?"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

M785's about 300g. MT2's are quoted at 280g"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

MT2 are 345g with a 160mm rotor, XT about 440g. (with 6 bolt 160mm rotor). Of course you could get a lighter rotor with XT, but the Magura comes with it.0

I'm quite intruiged by these, would be interested to see what they're like...0

Perhaps I should have been more specific. The newer, post Oro formula RX's have limited pad life as standard and do squeel alot when wet. the older Oro's are decent brakes, but of the newer ones, of which the RX is the same kind of price as the MT2, Xt etc (as the R1, R0 and the ones are considerably more) I haven't been that impressed with the Rx's.
A number of friends have traded their Rx's for Xt's and have nothing but praise for them.
Haven't tried the newer maguras, but my previous experiences have put me off somewhat, and they are still more expensive than Xt's, which imo have the best lever shape on the market, like all new shimano brakes, have massive power and you just can't ignore the price.0 -

Alright sonic; XT M785's for £135 or 2012 MT2's for £150 ? (both with no rotors but inc. delivery. XT's with standard pads). which would you chose?"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

A pair of XTs for 135?0
-
Back to the OP, it depends on whether they are the newer evo versions or not IMO.
The standard tech x2s are underpowered, but the newer evo models(especially with the race lever) are much improved.
The best option is to see if you can try a bike with the brakes in question out. Both hope and shimano have some fans and some haters.
The XTs are supposed to be not far off the saints in terms of power, but I dont think you would save much weight by switching.0 -

Pretty good I reckon. Although silver in stock now works for me. Had deore off them before, swapping the levers over Is a piece of the proverbial.Too many bikes, not all fully built.0 -
I've had saint m810 and xt m785 on my nomad and I stuck with the xt's tbh I'm nigh on 15 stone and they are ample powerful enough and weigh less.....so it makes sense tbh0
