Hi, i'm new here. Came to look at the Etape Pennines thread as I completed this event a couple of weeks ago. Stayed to look around and find info on new bikes, as things seem to have moved on a long way since I last bought a bike.

I was originally looking to replace my Battaglin road bike, but I only have a budget of £1000 on the cycle to work scheme, and as far as I can see, at that price point I can't see anything I would want to replace my road bike with. In some areas I think I would be trading down. My bike is old, heavy, and I love it. Running 9 speed Campag, mirage / veloce. Nearly everything is italian, with the exception of the rims which are Mavic, laced to Campag hubs for me by my LBS. Still runs like clockwork.

Here it is.

So the plan now is to replace my old Scott Reflex MTB with something more capable. Any advice considered. £1000, must come from Evans as that is where my voucher is for. I only use it for the tracks and bridleways locally plus the occasional ride out with the kids, so I am hoping I can get a nice hardtail. Confused about the whole 29er thing. Thats new!! They reming me of the old Raleigh Bombers and look a bit odd to me, so I will probably stick with 26 as there seem to be some good value bikes around, unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Bit of a 2 wheel nut all round really, when not on the bicycle I can normally be found out on my BMW.

Like the bike I nearly bought one back in the late 90's from Ricci in redruth, I test rode one but went for the Bottecchia coumbus sl instead. It looks in awesome condition, your right you probably would be hard pressed to better it with a modern bike a far as ride and comfort go.
Caveat - I buy and ride cheap, however, I reserve the right to advise on expensive kit that I have never actually used and possibly never will

Thats where mine came from. I got it mail order, can't remember exactly when, but sometime around 99 probably. With the exception of the front wheel it has been faultless. Front went out of true pretty quickly and a friend sorted it. I pulled the spokes through the rim on the rear when I fell off (in front of a queue of people waiting for a bus, idiot) so I had to have the rim replaced and laced to a new mavic rim. Front was re-built at the same time and no problems since. I am 16 stone, so I have been impressed that it has been so robust.
