quick Q - which size bash for a 36 ring?

quick question, I'm changing my gearing bastardising a 2x9 from a 3x9 and replacing the outer ring with a bash guard. was about to fit a new 36th middle ring, what size bash should i use? i got one that said "covers up to 36 tooth" but now i'm thinking i should have got the up to 40.
