campy 9 speed shifter only shifting 7 clicks

Hi,
I'm having trouble with a campagnolo xenon 9 speed shifter. When its cabled up, and under tension it will only shift 7 clicks, and never go into the larger sprocket on the rear. I took the shifter off to have a look to see if something had come loose etc. but it seemed fine, and oddly when not anchored to the bike and cabled up it would click 8 times up and down no problem.
As a background to this story I did have problems with it a while ago, as the metal disk at the rear of the mechanism inside came unscrewed which caused it to not shift at all. I screwed it back up with the spring etc. in place and it seemed ok..just wondered if I could of done something wrong in the re-assembly?
Has anyone any ideas?
Cheers.

Have you checked that the derailleur can physically move far enough across? (ie. limiter screws, length of travel, chain interference, etc etc.). If the derailleur can't move any further, the cable will be held tight and the shifter won't travel either.0

It wasn't something as simple as not having it on the bottom ratchet tooth when you set the bike up?0

Thanks for the replies chaps.
The rear derailleur seems ok, i can shift it up to the top gear by pulling on the gear cable manually.
I definately had the shifter down to the bottom position when re-fitting. It's foxed for the moment.0
