    You don't have to and it doesn't really matter.

    If your gauge says "90 psi" and you're happy with it then you know that you attach your pump and set the tyres to "90 psi". That "90 psi" might actually be 85 or 95 psi, but as long as you're setting it to the same point on the dial it doesn't really matter.

    Gives a starting point at least. And pinch flats are easy to avoid if you look where you're going and don't just plough through potholes without adjusting your weight backwards/forwards
