Campagnolo Jacket? Or something more sensible?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a soft-shell/winter jacket, and I'm rather torn between the Campagnolo Heritage Gironde jacket, or an Endura Windchill. Anyone got any opinions? Almost all the reviews (and there are a lot of them) for the Endura have been raving about it, but the Campagnolo one is a bit of an unknown quantity (I've found one or two positive reviews). I personally think the Campag one looks nicer though.

Or does anyone have any other suggestions? About 75 quid is my limit though (and I'm not looking for it to be waterproof).

Cheers

I have an older version too and love it. Very warm winter jacket.

I saw someone wearing one on a hill climb the other day  , mine only gets an outing when it's very cold.
  • I've got a similar campag one - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=72739 and I really like it. It has a mesh back to stop you getting too sweaty and it does seem pretty windproof so far.

part of the mesh did snag a bit on something though...but I got it for less than half price so wont complain too much
  • I love Campag clothing

check out this buyer on ebay, used him for a couple of years, brilliant service and dirt cheap

dont forget they size up small. Im a 38-40 chest and buy large

there are simply loads of windproof jackets about these days. I've been looking at getting another.

The Endura looks more like a baggier waterproof type cut whereas the Campag is more roadie/snug.

Have a look at the Gore range too - Oxygen, Contest etc. - all good windstopper fabric jackets.

  • Thanks all; looks like I'll probably get the Campag one then.

Now I just have to figure out sizing- all the warnings about Campag stuff coming up small are confusing me a bit. In my experience all cycling tops come up small. I'm 6'2", with about a 40in chest. I'd normally wear medium t-shirts, but always have to wear large cycling jerseys. Does this mean I should be getting the jacket in extra large? Or is Campag stuff just as small as all other cycling tops?

I've had the windchill for a while now and i can't fault it but i'd try before i buy so you don't get a baggy one. I've also got a Santini orbit which has a cracking roadie fit plus it looks and is the business.

I'm a big fan of Mavic stuff and have their Espoir Thermo jacket for winter.

JE James currently have it at a very good price:

  • That's brilliant, thanks all. In the end I wound up going for the Campag one in size large, in black (or possibly 'Titanium'). CRC have sold out of size large, so I went through ebay and actually had to pay a wee bit more- but I'm supposed to be buying this as a present for myself so it's not the end of the world. Just hope it fits!

same here. It's without a doubt the best piece of cycling clothing I own.

oh and another thumbsup for the suggested ebay seller mentioned further up this thread. His prices seem to have gone up a little bit this last year but there's still a bargain to be had.

Get the Campag gear while you can - apparently they're finishing with the clothing range next year. Should mean some of it going cheap though.
  • I bought this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=67434 and absolutely love it, just change what I wear underneath it depending upon the weather. I wouldn't pay full whack for one but with the discounts on Chain Reaction I couldn't say no.
  • Well, I now have the jacket and I must say it feels toasty warm. A large fits me fine (although it does appear to be tailored to the skinny). Slightly annoyingly, the colourway is different to the picture. It's more like this than like this, so I'm still trying to decide whether to return it or not.

I'd say the difference is the year. This year the colour is all black with one grey stripe. Last year was two-tone.

yeah they do some good stuff, and their prices have always mid-range, unlike some brands i could mention, damn shame they're stopping manufacture of their clothing. will be sorely missed imo.
  • I decided to keep the jacket, despite it not looking exactly like the picture, and took it for a 25 mile road test today and thought a wee review of it might be in order in case anyone's interested.

It is impressively warm. Glasgow today was about 8 to 10 degrees, with strongish winds and lots of rain. The jacket definitely kept me warm (had to undo the zip a few times), and I was only wearing a base layer underneath, so it's looking good for the winter. Very little sweat build up though, so it seems impressively breathable too. It did a very good job of keeping the rain at bay too- I stayed pretty much dry (and it's difficult to tell if what moisture there was inside the jacket was from rain or sweat), and certainly my phone stayed dry in the little rear media pocket. Good long sleeves on it too. I really like it so far, and am considering looking at Campag's range of shorts now too.

Thanks for the advice all- especially about sizing.
