Rim advice

I'm getting a set of wheels built on 28 hole front and rear DT Swiss hubs.I have been thinking about the Ambrosio Excellight SSC rims or Open Pros.Would appreciate any input.

I have just has some Ambrosio Excellight with Ambrosio (Novatech) Hubs and DT Swiss competition spokes and they ride wonderfully.

The black rim with etched logos are nice and clean but understated - which I like.

I use both open pro and ambrosio excellight. Both are good choices. I do prefer the excellights though, they really are a top quality rim. The braking surface lasts well using koolstop salmon brake pads. The eyelets hold high spoke tension without cracks forming.
If you aren't a fly weight I'd think about 32 holes for the rear.

Yes thanks Ugo they indeed do.

Although my STI jammed up so had to ride home (5 miles) in top gear and now have it in several hunderd bits tryng to get the cable out ...AARRRAGGGGGGHHHHH

Still, the wheels are indeed nice.

I have built a lot with both and they are both very good... it's down to price really... Open PRO 28 are cheaper than Excellight 28, but as 32 you can find offers which make the price the same (Planet X).
Consider also the DT swiss 465 28H in white, they are superb rims

Below 80Kg ok ,but still a good bit from 70. Incentive will be there to keep weight down in that case.Just a couple of more questions, is one particular rim more suited to heavier riders than another and how can wheels factory built wheels get away with such low spoke count without rider weight limits? Thanks again.

Deep V rims are suited to heavier boys... Factory wheels get away with a warranty. One can build a set of 20/24 which will be fine for most heavy guys, but Maybe can't be bothered to deal with the consequences of one failure, they get away with a replacement and once it is expired with a shoulder shrub and flogging you a new set

I have the OpenPro CD rims on my 531 bike, with Dura Ace 32H hubs. They're good rims. Have ordered the Excellights for my 953 bike, with Campag Record 32H hubs as they look nicer and suit the bike better. Both rims are about the same weight and very similar construction, so I would think they will feel much the same.

I think the DT Swiss hub should be OK, you don't want to use hubs with a smaller flange-centre dimension as they will build a weak wheel with these rims. Standard Shimano/campag dimensioned hubs are fine, with narrow flanged hubs its better to use a deeper/stiffer rim.

Thanks everyone.Time now to decide.Since starting this I have begun looking at 23mm rims as well as the Excellights,DT465 and Mavics. Looking at Velocity A23 and H plus Son Archetype,any views on either of these rims and is there any great advantage in running wider rims. They will be built on DT190 hubs 28hole front and rear. Advice, opinions appreciated.
