Where would I go to ride? + Any meetups for mountain bikers?

I'm going to get a 5.2 Rockrider, but just wondering where would be a good place to ride (for a complete beginner)?

I'm based in Hornchurch, I've seen loads of places where there are marshland type of walkways
Also, I'm sure Epping Forest isn't too far away (by drive)

Any suggestions would be great

Also... are there any meetups or groups that do mountain biking in London?
I looked at meetup.com and couldn't find anything

    so you have looked in the Rides section for organising rides? and the Routes section to discuss routes and conditions?

    might be an idea.

    If you are ready to drive to Brentwood (Essex) quite a few regular rides, a few for beginners with no pressure at all.
