What are these letters on my phone screen?

I have a rather basic Nokia C2 phone, not a smartphone. In the top left of the screen is the signal strength indicator. Next to this the letters E or G usually appear (but never together). Sometimes the letter G has a line through it and sometimes the E has a box around it. Further to the left, on the other side of the signal strength indicator there sometimes appears the letters 3G.

I've no idea what these letters indicate (although I can probably guess what the 3G is about).

Can anyone explain??

E stands for EDGE, which is a very slow and basic connection type. G refers to 2G which is a slightly quicker data connection but no where near as fast as 3g. I'm guessing when the G has a line through it that indicates the connection is not active. :)

I thought E stood for "Emergency" calls only???????
  • Emergency call notifications only come through when there isn't cellular network, not just internet. Don't take my word for it though, I could be wrong.

You've got me looking at my phone now and again it changes between 3G, G and H.

What does the H stand for then?

H is basically 3G+ or 3.5G, the fastest one until 4G comes out.

It stands for HSDPA , High Speed Data Packet Access.

What does 3G, 3G+, HSDPA, HSUPA, GPRS and EDGE mean and how do they affect me?

Each of these terms refer to different types of network that we offer. As mobile broadband uses our mobile coverage, the signal and network connection you'll receive will vary across the country. The great news is that we have the largest integrated 3G/2G network.

3G is the quickest mobile broadband network that is available while an EDGE connection is via 2.5G and 2G is slightly slower; GPRS connection is via the 2G network.

HSDPA and HSUPA use the 3G+ network and have varying speeds. In the near future, there will be the possibility to reach even higher speeds. This means that you'll be able to load web pages and download music or videos much quicker using our mobile broadband.

Emergency calls can be made on your mobile when you do not have your own network coverage, but only when there is coverage from another network.

Ha! The one thing we can never truly understand, although only marginally more puzzling than 'pedalling 'efficiency' '.
