Would 700c x 32 fit on my road bike?

Hi guys,
Over the winter I was looking at a cheapo MTB to commute with as 700c x 23 on my single speed just feels too dangerous. But I was thinking, would it fit cyclocross tyres (the bobbly ones which would hopefully mean grip) on at 700x32? It's a vintage raleigh with plenty of clearance - just thinking its probably more cost effective to add tyres & mudguards than buy a whole other bike...
Cheers

If you are riding on tarmac, I wouldn't put knobbly tyres on, they will have less grip than slicks and wear out in no time.
In what way is it feeling dangerous? (excuse my ignorance of single-speeds) Just changing to a different slick could make the difference, you may not need to go as far as 32's either.0
